When a team hires a new offensive coordinator, the conversation almost always begins with what he'll do to help develop the quarterback position. That's certainly true in the case of the Philadelphia Eagles, where Sean Mannion seemingly can't be mentioned without the conversation shifting to the dual-threat Jalen Hurts.
Coach Mannion's influence on Hurts' development will be scrutinized from the moment training camp begins, but Hurts certainly won't be the only offensive star positioned to benefit from the transition. Mannion also takes over an offense featuring one of football's most dangerous running backs in Saquon Barkley.
After another outstanding season that reaffirmed his status, one many saw as an off-year, Barkley enters 2026 with a chance
to become even more productiveif Mannion can build upon the foundation already in place. Few coordinators walk into a better situation.
An Eagles offense built to create favorable matchups
Philadelphia returns one of the NFL's premier offensive lines, an elite quarterback, and one of the league's best (and most underappreciated) wide receivers in DeVonta Smith. Barkley is a running back capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. That combination forces defenses into impossible choices.
Stack the box to slow Barkley, and Hurts has favorable opportunities through the air. Focus on Smith outside, and Barkley often finds lighter boxes between the tackles. Commit a defender to spying Hurts, and another gap opens for the running game.
Mannion doesn't need to reinvent that formula. His challenge is finding new ways to stress defenses that already struggle to account for Philadelphia's offensive talent. The assumption is that means Barkley will be fed more carries. That allows the OC to play the 'mad scientist' role and create more efficient opportunities through motion, misdirection, varied personnel packages and complementary play-action concepts.

Mannion played quarterback, so he's one of those coaches who intimately understand the player's perspective. A quarterback's best friends are a good offensive line and a strong running game. Helping Barkley helps Hurts.
Adding new wrinkles can slow linebackers just enough to create larger rushing lanes or put Barkley in space against defenders who aren't equipped to tackle him one-on-one. He separates himself because his vision, acceleration and ability to change direction make him one of the NFL's most explosive players.
Barkley doesn't need 30 touches to dominate a game, but few would complain if he were given such. Sometimes, he only needs one crease. Quarterbacks always receive most of the credit, or blame, for an offense's success, but the Eagles, during the Nick Sirianni-Jalen Hurts era, have long been at their best when their running game dictates the terms of the contest.
A productive Barkley forces defenses to respect the run. It opens throwing lanes for Jalen Hurts. It keeps opposing pass rushers from attacking relentlessly.
Hurts' production will rightly judge Mannion. That's why Mannion's influence may extend beyond the quarterback. If he can find creative ways to make an already dangerous Barkley even more efficient, the ripple effects could elevate Philadelphia's entire offense. In the process, he may end up helping Barkley nearly as much as the franchise quarterback everyone expects him to develop.
