Markel Bell will make his first road start for the Eagles on Sunday, taking over at right tackle after Lane Johnson’s retirement, with Jacksonville’s pass rush waiting in London. Philadelphia selected the former Miami tackle with the No. 68 overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft, after adding wide receiver Makai Lemon and tight end Eli Stowers in the first two rounds. Bell gave the Eagles another young blocker to develop. Johnson’s departure has accelerated that responsibility.
Bell made his first NFL start against the Rams last Sunday and played the entire game. His next assignment comes against a Jacksonville defensive front featuring Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.
Rams debut showed power and protection issues
Bell’s first start showed the physicality Philadelphia saw
in Miami, along with areas that need attention.
In his review of the Rams game, PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski highlighted Bell’s ability to displace defenders in the running game and use his length to keep an edge rusher away from Hurts. Early on, Bell blocked a defensive lineman before reaching the second level and finishing against a linebacker.
The protection issues were more complicated, as Bell allowed six pressures and was responsible for three sacks of Jalen Hurts.
Those examples make communication and finishing blocks priorities against Jacksonville. Bell must stay connected with Steen when rushers cross and maintain his protection when Hurts extends a play.
Philadelphia can help its rookie tackle
Sean Mannion and offensive-line coach Chris Kuper can reduce the number of isolated pass-blocking assignments Bell faces. A tight end or running back can chip an edge rusher before releasing into a route. Quick throws can limit the time Jacksonville has to reach Hurts, while manageable down-and-distance situations can keep the defense from attacking obvious passing downs.
Sunday will provide another look at his readiness. The Eagles need progress in protection and communication as their third-round rookie takes on a starting job that opened much sooner than expected.
