Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell will undergo testing Monday after hyperextending his knee during Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Mitchell appeared to suffer the injury while tackling Rams running back Blake Corum early in the third quarter. He walked slowly to the sideline, entered the medical tent, and was listed as questionable to return before being replaced by Jonathan Jones. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Philadelphia hopes Mitchell isn't dealing with anything more serious than a bone bruise. Upcoming tests should determine whether the injury damaged any ligaments, cartilage, or other structures in the knee.
Mitchell’s absence would create another significant concern for an Eagles defense already navigating
multiple injuries. The first-team All-Pro has recorded 19 tackles and two passes defended through four games this season.

What could the tests reveal?
The best-case outcome would be a bone bruise without structural damage. Bone bruises typically heal without surgery, but recovery can take several weeks depending on the location and severity. Mitchell’s availability would depend on his pain level, swelling, range of motion, and ability to run and change direction.
Testing could also reveal a mild hyperextension without a significant ligament injury. That would likely lead to rest, treatment, and a gradual return to football activity.
More concerning outcomes include damage to the ACL, PCL, MCL, meniscus, or other stabilizing structures. A partial ligament injury could create a multiweek absence, while a complete tear could require surgery and months of rehabilitation. Cleveland Clinic notes that hyperextended knees range from mild injuries treated with rest to severe cases involving ligament damage and surgery.
The Eagles have not designated Mitchell for Week 5. Their first practice report will provide the next indication of his availability for Sunday’s game against Jacksonville in London. If Mitchell cannot play, Jones could fill an expanded role opposite Riq Woolen, as Philadelphia needs to replace one of the most important players in Vic Fangio’s secondary.
