It's become an annual autumn ritual. No, not taking free relief from a pile of leaves, but speculating about when, or if, Tiger Woods will play competitive golf again.
That conversation picked up steam once more after video surfaced of Woods hitting balls during an exhibition at the TGR Junior Invitational presented by TaylorMade at Pebble Beach. The 15-time major champion's swing looked sharp, and his upper body suggested plenty of time spent in the gym. But rather than draw sweeping conclusions from a brief social media clip, Golfweek checked in with PGA Tour veteran Billy Horschel, who participated alongside Woods at the event.
"He looked the best I've seen him in some time," Horschel said.
Asked whether he believes Woods will compete again,
Horschel didn't hesitate.
"You know he wants to. It's in his DNA. It's in his blood," he said, while noting Woods offered no indication of a timeline for a return and that Horschel didn't press him for one.
Tiger Woods' last competition
Woods, 50, hasn't competed on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship. He committed to play the 2025 Genesis Invitational but withdrew as he mourned the death of his mother. Another surgery soon followed, ending any realistic hopes of a return that season.
He competed in TGLin March, but Jupiter Links was eliminated in the playoffs. Woods reportedly had been targeting the Masters before another car accident near his Florida home on March 27 sent him to a rehabilitation facility in Switzerland. Since then, he has largely stayed out of the public eye and said little about his competitive future.
Speaking recently on the Fore Play podcast, Kevin Kisner suggested Woods plans to be more involved in TGL competition going forward. Kisner said one reason he was dropped from Woods' team following his two-year contract was that Woods intends to play himself.
That's good news for TGL fans. But what does it mean for actual tournament golf?
According to a source, Woods was invited to participate in the Skins Game, the one-day exhibition held the day after Thanksgiving. Perhaps he simply wasn't interested. But if Woods doesn't feel capable of playing in a one-day exhibition, it would raise questions about his ability to compete in the Hero World Challenge, the 72-hole, no-cut event in the Bahamas that he hosts and has frequently used as a launching pad for previous comebacks.
On Monday, the Hero World Challenge announced most of its 20-player field, and Woods' name was notably absent. Three spots remain available.
Will Tiger Woods play PNC Championship?
There may be another, more realistic avenue for a return. According to a source familiar with plans for the PNC Championship who was not authorized to discuss them publicly, tournament organizers are holding a place for Woods and son Charlie should he decide he is able to play. The tournament has revealed only three of its 20 teams for the December event, which is held after the Hero.
Woods has repeatedly said how much he enjoys competing alongside Charlie, who is committed to Florida State. The format also works in his favor. Woods is permitted to ride in a cart, and because it is a scramble-style team event, he can conserve energy by relying on Charlie when necessary.
The 36-hole tournament may represent the safest and most comfortable environment for Woods to re-enter competition and see where his game stands.
Golfweek also spoke to the parent of one junior participant, who said Woods was highly engaged throughout the weekend at the TGR Junior. Woods attended a reception Sunday evening and announced championship pairings the following morning. He signed autographs, posed for photos and spent significant time interacting with players.
"He did speak really clearly on stage," the parent said. "One question from a kid was, 'How do you approach your putts when you have a 5-footer that breaks hard?' Tiger said he approaches all putts with a 'hole-able' speed approach. If it hits any part of the cup, he wants it to go in.
"He said he thinks about his golf shots the way an artist thinks about painting. He loves being creative and pointed to some of his exaggerated follow-throughs as examples. He was a total gentleman and great with the kids. But near the end, he started sweating heavily and looked uncomfortable."
Arguing for Tiger Woods on Champions
Whether Woods is nearing another comeback remains unclear.
Flushing a few shots on the range is a long way from walking 72 holes in tournament conditions. Woods has often discussed the physical demands required simply to prepare to compete after years of surgeries and injuries. The challenge isn't just swinging a club. It's recovering from the effort.
That's why some say PGA Tour Champions may be a more realistic landing spot for Tiger in 2027. Rookie Zach Johnson, who has been winning in bunches since turning 50, remains hopeful.
"He's texted me and wished me congrats a few times, which is very kind, and my message back has been, 'Dude, get healthy and get your butt out here,'" Johnson said. "We want him out here. But if he can play, and if he can walk, he probably still wants to play with the kids on the big tour."
Arguing against Tiger Woods on Champions
Paul Goydos believes Woods' eventual transition to the Champions Tour would create a different kind of spectacle.
"Chaos," Goydos said when asked what Woods would bring to the senior circuit. "I don't think he's going to play the Champions Tour. I don't see how that brings value to the PGA Tour. If he were to play here, there'd be all the media and no one would pay attention to what's going on at the big tour. They don't want that.
"But that said, I'd imagine he'd want to win the U.S. Senior Open."
For now, that's all speculation.
Still, for fans eager to see Woods compete again, there is at least a reason for optimism. All it took was a few swings at Pebble Beach to reignite hope that one more comeback may be on the horizon.
Efforts to reach Woods' representatives for comment were not returned.
