It all comes down to this.
After 36 events with 29 different winners, there is just one champion left to be crowned in the PGA Tour's 2026 season. There are 18 holes remaining at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, the last of three legs that make up the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and there's a lot on the line ―$10 million, to be exact. That's how much money the man who emerges victorious on Sunday will take home, along with the title of FedEx Cup Champion.
Here's why you need to see the final round of the 2026 Tour Championship. Here's why Sunday Matters:
The leaderboard

The frontrunner: Viktor Hovland
There are rollercoaster seasons, and then there's what Viktor Hovland has experienced in 2026.
He has had weeks where he's looked like one of the world's best, and he's had weeks where he's struggled immensely. To break it down: Hovland has won once (in a playoff over Scottie Scheffler), he's finished inside the top-15 six times, he's finished outside the top 30 six times, and he's missed four cuts. Up and down, up and down.
Fortunately for Hovland, this is definitely one of those "up" weeks. Pretty good timing considering the Tour Championship features the richest prize on the PGA Tour. Hovland has been flat out excellent at East Lake, carding rounds of 64, 66 and 65 to take the solo lead into the final day. And while everyone knows him as one of the game's premier ball strikers, Hovland has made his money on the greens this week. Even with eight Tour wins and a slew of high finishes throughout his career, Hovland has never ― not once ― led the field in strokes gained putting. Through three rounds at East Lake, he's doing exactly that.
Another thing working in Hovland's favor this week is the fact that he's done this before. He cruised to a five-shot win here in 2023, winning the FedEx Cup in just his fourth full season on Tour. He might not be able to build a cushion that big, given some of the names who will be working to chase him down, but if Hovland can continue putting like he has been all week, he's going to be a very, very tough man to beat on Sunday.
The challengers: Ryan Gerard, Scottie Scheffler
Playing in the final pairing alongside Hovland, 36-hole leader Ryan Gerard managed to keep pace throughout the day, posting a bogey-free, 4-under 66 to enter the final round just one shot off the lead.
Gerard has been one of the Tour's breakout stars over the past year. He burst onto the scene with a win at the Barracuda Championship in July 2025, then got off to a hot start in 2026 with a pair of runner-up finishes in the first two events of the year, the Sony Open in Hawaii and the American Express. He lost in a dramatic playoff against J.T. Poston at the Memorial Tournament, and recorded back-to-back top-10 finishes at the Open Championship and the Rocket Classic.
Gerard now has the chance to establish himself among the best players in the world if he can manage to secure the biggest win of his career at the Tour Championship. If he does, it might raise the eyebrows of one Brandt Snedeker, who will be making his captain's picks for the 2026 Presidents Cup in short order. As if a $10 million prize wasn't motivation enough for Gerard, he has a lot more than money to gain from a stellar performance Sunday.
There are four players tied for third at 12 under, three shots off the lead, but there's one who stands out from that pack. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has been quietly lurking all week long, posting rounds of 65, 67 and 66 to keep himself right in the mix entering Sunday's final round, where he'll look to win the Tour Championship for a second time.
Scheffler, the 2024 FedEx Cup Champion, won his first start of the year at the American Express, but then suffered through an eight-month winless drought, with five runner-up finishes in that span. He finally broke back into the winner's circle again with an absolutely dominant performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, where he dusted the field to the tune of an eight-shot victory.
Now, with the PGA Tour Player of the Year race still very much a toss-up, he can strengthen his case and likely win the award for the fifth straight season with a win on Sunday. He'll need a low round to do so, not only because he's three back but because there are so many other big names still in the hunt, but this is Scottie Scheffler we're talking about. When he's chasing, he's dangerous. Hovland, Gerard and the rest of the contenders should fully expect to get Scheffler's best shot in the final round.
The reasonable longshot: Rory McIlroy
There are so many players who could emerge from the pack and make some noise on Sunday, but it's hard to look past the man who's won at East Lake three times before and could add a record fourth FedEx Cup to his trophy case. That would be world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who looked to be dead in the water after two rounds before making nine birdies en route to a 7-under 63 on Saturday, surging up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh at 10 under.
Sure, he's five shots back, but you might recall the 2022 Tour Championship, when McIlroy began Sunday's final round trailing by four, only to storm back and win the title by one shot. If there was ever a man who epitomizes the cliche "been there, done that," it's Rory McIlroy at East Lake.
Just like Scheffler, he's a dangerous player when he's in full-blown chase mode, and that's exactly the mindset he'll take into Sunday. He came close last week, erasing a five-shot deficit to tie Wyndham Clark's lead on the back nine in the final round of the BMW Championship, only to make a painful bogey on the 71st hole while Clark slammed the door. This time, McIlroy will be looking to finish the job, and it'd be a mistake to count him out.
The hole to watch: No. 9
The best holes in pro golf produce drama, and a long par 3 with a forced carry over water is a great recipe. The ninth at East Lake Golf Club measures as long as 270 yards, with players often taking a long iron, hybrid or even a fairway wood just to hit the green, which slopes from back-to-front and has bunkers guarding it short-right and long-left.
There's really no miss here. Trouble lurks everywhere, and one bad swing can easily dash a player's hopes of winning the Tour Championship before he even reaches the back nine. The strategy is simple: Just hit the green and take your two-putt par. Easier said than done. Through three rounds, No. 9 has played as the second-hardest hole on the course, yielding just two birdies all week.
The FedEx Cup won't be won on the ninth hole Sunday, but it could sure be lost. A poor result can be a real momentum killer, while a good one can propel contenders to the closing stretch with a hop in their step. You'll want to make sure you're tuned in when the final few pairings reach the ninth on Sunday.
The weather: Hot and humid final round in Atlanta
As has been the case for much of these FedEx Cup Playoffs, players will be dealing with hot and humid conditions Sunday in Atlanta. The forecast calls for a high temperature in the upper 80s, with the humidity pushing the heat index well north of 90 degrees. There's a small chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon, but otherwise, if the players can withstand the heat, it's looking like a day that could yield some low scores, with a light breeze of just 5-10 mph coming from the southeast.
