There you are at a stop light, patiently waiting for it to turn green, when a sedan pulls up in the next lane. It’s silvery gray, has a familiar shape to it and looks like a million other cars you’ve seen on the road. I moment later the light changes and that blend-in-with-every-other-car is roaring down the street as its engine sounds like something used to get a jet off an aircraft carrier.
Appearances can be deceiving, and that’s the case with SuperStroke’s REVL Element 4X grips ($9.99 each). At first glance, it looks like another textured, full-swing club grip, but when you hold it you will immediately notice that something is different.
The Element 4X has a reduced taper, like SuperStroke’s popular putter grips, which means it does not narrow
as much toward the bottom as a conventional grip. SuperStroke enlarged that lower section to create the feel of four extra wraps of grip tape. Golfers, including many tour pros, have been adding tape beneath their lower hand for years, but in this grip SuperStroke has built that wider diameter into the grip itself.
Why? SuperStroke says the fuller profile is designed to help golfers apply more even pressure with both hands. The idea is that a lower hand with less room to squeeze may be less inclined to take over during the swing, helping you keep the clubface more stable through impact and help you over getting overly “handsy” or “wristy” through impact.
There is more going on beneath the surface. The upper section combines SuperStroke’s ACE material with cord for a firmer, tackier feel and better traction in wet conditions. The lower section uses the brand’s softer Genesis+ material, giving a different feel. The material names don’t really matter, but the design makes sense: firmer where your top hand holds on, softer (and wider) where the lower hand might grip too tightly.
The REVL Element 4X comes in Standard, Mid Size and Jumbo. All three are 10.7 inches long, and their weights range from 62.5 grams for Standard to 81 grams for Jumbo.
If you have ever asked a club builder to add tape beneath your lower hand, the Element 4X puts that familiar modification where you can’t see it.
