The Solheim Cup's 20th edition will conclude Sunday at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, Netherlands, adding another chapter to the biggest team event in women's golf. Naturally, that raises the question: will the 24 players competing be paid for representing their countries?
The short answer is: no. Players do not receive prize money for competing in the Solheim Cup. The event is considered the biggest in the women's game for representing one's country, and playing for the flag in the competition is an honor of a lifetime for every player and captain.
Now, players for both the United States and Europe are well taken care of during the week. When it comes to flights, accommodations, food and more, there are plenty of benefits for those who are selected
to compete in the competition that go way beyond prize money. Add in all of the gear and memories from the week, it makes up for almost anything prize money could.
But the Solheim Cup remains one of the weeks of the year where players aren't competing for a paycheck. Instead, they're hoping to represent for their team and country.
At the Ryder Cup, the U.S. players and captains each received $500,000 last year at Bethpage Black – $300,000 of which had to be donated to charity. The Europeans did not receive any money.
