Charlie Woods saved his best shot for last.
The son of Tiger Woods, who plays for the Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, drained a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Tuesday to shoot a 2-under 69 and claim medalist honors in the Class 1A-District 14 championship at Champions Club at Summerfield in Stuart, Florida.
The dramatic finish gave Woods the individual title by one shot over teammate Brooks Colton and helped Benjamin take another step toward defending its Florida boys golf state championship. The Buccaneers shot 290, beating runner-up Oxbridge Academy by 15 strokes.
"We got two good rounds out of Charlie and Brooks," Benjamin coach Toby Harbeck told the Palm Beach Post. "Charlie made a 40-foot putt on the last hole to win the individual
title. Charlie shot a 69 and Brooks shot a 70. That's what you want out of your No. 1 and No. 2."
Woods made birdies at Nos. 4, 10, 13 and 18 and played the other 14 holes in 2 over. Colton's 1-under 70 included an eagle at the par-5 fourth.
Woods is scheduled to play at Florida State next fall, joining the top-ranked prospect in the Class of 2027, Miles Russell, in the Seminoles' recruiting class.
The performance continued a strong fall for Woods and Benjamin. At the Palm League Championship in September at Biltmore Golf Course Miami, Woods shot an even-par 71 and finished eighth individually as the Buccaneers rallied on the back nine to win the team championship. Andrew Tsar, an SMU commit, earned medalist honors with a 2-under 69.
"It played really hard, long, and windy and rainy," Harbeck said of the district event. "It was everything. So, I'm very pleased. You're trying to move on each week and get to the finals, so that's what we did. We've got to keep going forward."
