ATLANTA – And then there were 29 competitors for the $10 million first prize at the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup finale, the Tour Championship.
J.J. Spaun withdrew while playing the sixth hole of the first round on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club. He cited a shoulder injury, and was carted back to the clubhouse. He was 4 over after five holes.
Spaun, 36, won the Valero Texas Open in April for his third career Tour title. He earned slightly more than $5 million this season and finished 21st in the season-long points race before the reset this week.
Spaun made his first Ryder Cup appearance last year at Bethpage after winning the 2025 U.S. Open and is under consideration for a captain’s pick for the U.S. team at Medinah No. 3 next month. He finished 10th
in the U.S. team points standings in which the top six automatically qualified for the team. U.S. Captain Brandt Snedeker will make his six picks to round out the 12-man squad on Wednesday.
