PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Forget PGA Tour University for a moment.
The real road to professional golf often begins years earlier, when the players are still teenagers, still carrying their own bags and still dreaming about places they have only seen on television.
The AJGA has quietly become one of the great success stories in golf. Its junior circuit, open to boys and girls ages 12 to 19, has grown into a nationwide proving ground for the stars of tomorrow. This year, the organization is staging 145 events across the country, the largest single-year schedule in its history. And nowhere is the connection between junior golf and the professional game more visible than at the AJGA's Junior Players Championship.
This Labor Day weekend, the tournament
celebrates its 20th anniversary at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the same legendary course that hosts the Players Championship. Seventy-eight of the world's best young golfers are gathered in Jacksonville, representing 16 countries and 19 states. Thirteen members of the 2026 Junior Presidents Cup teams are in the field, including 10 Americans and three international players.
For many of them, this is more than another junior tournament. It is a glimpse of the future.
Nearly every elite golfer eventually has a moment when the training wheels come off. For countless players, that moment happened on the AJGA circuit. It was where they learned to compete against the best, to travel, to handle pressure and, perhaps most importantly, to play fearless golf.
Stephen Hamblin has seen that transformation from the front row. He has been the AJGA's executive director since 1984, when the organization looked nothing like the national powerhouse it is today. Back then, the AJGA owned a broken-down van and staged somewhere between 13 and 18 tournaments a year. During those early days, board member Jerry Cole stood up at a meeting and predicted that the organization would soon be running multiple events. Hamblin thought the man had lost his mind.
“I looked at him like he had three heads,” Hamblin recalled.
The AJGA could barely manage the tournaments it already had. But Cole understood where junior golf was headed. His vision was simple: Bring tournaments to the kids instead of making the kids travel endlessly to the tournaments. Expand the schedule. Reduce the cost. Give more young golfers an opportunity to compete. He was right.
Today, AJGA tournaments seemingly blanket the country, creating a nationwide pipeline for professional golf. Hamblin still remembers another moment that captured just how far the organization had to go. At a players meeting, a young golfer raised his hand and said the AJGA needed more tournaments “in civilization.”
Hamblin asked him an obvious question: Where, exactly, was civilization?
“California,” the player answered.
The room probably got a laugh.
But the underlying message was serious. Young golfers wanted opportunities closer to home, and the AJGA eventually found a way to provide them. Twenty years ago, another man was thinking about how to make one particular opportunity unforgettable.
Billy Dettlaff was then the general manager and director of golf at TPC Sawgrass. He had an idea: What if the best junior golfers could experience the same stage as the professionals? Not a watered-down version. The real thing.
Give them a place in the locker room. Give them the same tees. Give them the same hole locations. Put them on the Players Stadium Course and let them experience, for a few days, what it feels like to be a PGA Tour player.
“What if we could capture the best junior golfers and mirror the PGA Tour experience,” Dettlaff remembers thinking, “and make it their most memorable experience in junior golf?”
That idea became the Junior Players.
Two decades later, it has become a Labor Day weekend tradition — and something of a carrot dangling in front of young golfers who dream of reaching the game's biggest stages. In that respect, the Junior Players has a little of the same magic as the Drive, Chip and Putt finals at Augusta National. The possibility of getting there can make a young golfer work a little harder, practice a little longer and believe a little more.
Jacksonville's own Bud Cauley was the first player to complete an extraordinary double: playing in the Junior Players and later teeing it up in the PGA Tour's flagship event, the Players Championship.
Since then, 87 golfers have accomplished the feat. The list includes major champions Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa. It's a list that isn't finished growing, not by a long shot.
One of the most remarkable developments in junior golf has been the way professional golfers — men and women — have embraced the next generation by attaching their names to AJGA tournaments. For some, the connection is especially personal. They were competing in AJGA events themselves only a few years earlier. They remember the nerves, the long drives, the tournament pressure and the unmistakable thrill of seeing their name on an AJGA leaderboard. Their involvement isn't merely ceremonial. They are giving back to the place that helped launch them.
An alphabet soup of junior and developmental tours has emerged to feed the enormous demand from young players chasing their own versions of Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam. But the AJGA remains at the top of that food chain. For a junior golfer, the organization's simple white plastic bag tag — bearing a player's name and graduation year — can become a badge of honor.
Five years ago, Ben James won the Junior Players Championship. Now he's a professional golfer, and in 2026 he has already shot 62 on the PGA Tour twice — at the RBC Canadian Open in June and the Wyndham Championship in August. The boy who once stood on the first tee at TPC Sawgrass dreaming about the professionals is now one of them. And that's what makes the Junior Players so compelling.
Every year, another group of teenagers arrives at TPC Sawgrass carrying those dreams. They walk into the same locker room. They stand on the same tees. They stare down the same intimidating holes. Some will become professionals. Some will become college stars. Some will simply leave with memories of competing against the best young golfers in the world.
Justin Thomas in 2021 became the first Players champion who had competed in the Junior Players. Perhaps, someday, one of the Junior Players champions will return to TPC Sawgrass for something much bigger. The ultimate double? Win the Junior Players and then come back as a pro and win the Players Championship. When a reporter floated that audacious possibility to Hamblin, he smiled.
This time, he didn't even look at the reporter like he had three heads.
