LOS CABOS, Mexico ― The first home at the Legacy Club at Diamante belongs to none other than Tiger Woods, designer of the course and one of three layouts at the private resort destination on the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.
Tiger's corporate logo is embedded in both the driveway and swimming pool of one of the 14 Founder Estates, the only homes located within the course itself. Additional residential offerings with golf views will be available elsewhere in the development.
Next door to Woods' property, developer Ken Jowdy is building his own home, though progress there has taken a backseat to completing the golf course.
"It won't look good if people think I finished my house before the golf course," Jowdy told Golfweek. "So
once we finish the course, then I'll hit the gas on my place."
When construction is complete, Woods and Jowdy will count a pair of NFL stars among their neighbors. Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, arguably the league's most dangerous receiving tandem, have purchased homesites just a few doors down at Legacy Club. The touchdown makers already have broken ground on their residences at the invitation-only community, where the duo regularly vacation and play golf during the offseason.
The Legacy Club will be Woods' third design at Diamante, joining El Cardonal, his first completed golf-course design and host of the PGA Tour's World Wide Technology Championship, and the Oasis Short Course. Diamante's original course, The Dunes, was designed by Davis Love III and ranks fifth on Golfweek's Best list of courses in Mexico, the Caribbean, Atlantic islands and Central America. El Cardonal is ranked 30th.
The concept behind Legacy Club is exclusivity. Membership will be capped at 250 and structured as a multigenerational family membership, allowing members to extend privileges to spouses, children and future generations. [It’s designed as a vertical membership so one member could have four kids and a spouse and those kids could have four kids and spouses for 20 individuals accessing one membership.]
"It's been said we're building a little city, and this is going to be the country club inside the city," Jowdy said. "That's completely set apart from everything else that we have. It's a different membership. There's no unaccompanied play. In that respect, it'll probably be the most exclusive golf course in Cabo."
So when will Chase, Higgins and fellow members get their first look at Woods' latest creation, which was designed alongside longtime collaborator Beau Welling?
Jowdy said construction has hit a few snags along the way but is on schedule for a soft opening timeline that makes more sense for its seasonal residents.
"We were trying to get it fully grassed by the end of this year, but we won't make it. February, hopefully. There's no sense opening in the spring because homeowners typically flee for cooler climates that time of year. So, we'll be ready to play this time next year ahead of the tournament in October and get it right," Jowdy said, adding of Chase and Higgins, "They've been great supporters here and coming for the last five or six years. We started construction on their houses this year. Hopefully mine gets done before theirs, but it's going to be close."
