Jordan Spieth's escapability is stuff of legend. So much so that there's even a term for it. Anyone who makes an unlikely birdie or par after getting themselves into deep trouble has made a "Spiethian save."
So, at this point, nothing Spieth does in that regard should surprise us. But he might have painted his magnum opus on Friday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The three-time major champion stepped up to the ninth tee for his final hole of the second round at the 2026 Wyndham Championship, sitting at 3 under for the tournament and smack dab on the projected cutline. He needed a par to have any chance of making the weekend. Those chances appeared to go out the window when he sent his tee shot so far right that the tracer
made it look like his ball might end up in Raleigh.
Spieth found his ball, but he was in jail, with no possibility of getting it anywhere near the green with his second shot. He had no choice but to crouch under a tree and punch straight out into the fairway, which he executed quite well, leaving himself 90 yards left to the hole. His third was nothing spectacular. He hit the green but still had 25 feet left for par, which he absolutely had to make if he wanted to play the weekend.
So, of course he canned it.

As of 2 p.m. ET, DataGolf predicts just a 4 percent chance that the cutline moves to 4 under, meaning Spieth is almost certain to make the cut after carding rounds of 68 and 69 over the first two days. On Thursday, he hit his opening tee shot out of bounds and made double bogey on No. 1 before playing the rest of the round bogey-free.
Even though he hasn't managed to record a top-10 finish all year, advancing to the weekend at the Wyndham Championship guarantees Spieth a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which begin next week in Memphis. He's currently projected to finish the regular season at 56th in the points standings, well inside the top-70 cutoff.
And who knows? Maybe he'll catch fire and get himself in contention this weekend at Sedgefield.
It's a long shot, but if there's one thing Jordan Spieth has taught us throughout his career (and on his final hole Friday), it's to never say never.
