LYTHAM ST. ANNES, ENGLAND – The list of recent players who've won the Smyth Salver back to back is a short but lofty one: Jeeno Thitikul (2018 and 2019) and Lydia Ko (2012 and 2013).
Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro joins them after finishing 4 over to earn low amateur honors at the AIG Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Last year at Royal Porthcawl, the Spaniard shot 30 on the back nine to finish in a share of eighth and earn her spot in this year's field.
"Very happy with my performance overall," said Sampedro, who is currently in a share of 29th. "Had some highs and lows as always, but obviously the low amateur award means a lot to me, and to get it for the second year in a row is a huge honor."
Sampedro plans to take off the
rest of the summer before heading back to Stanford for her senior year. The No. 2-ranked amateur in the world, Sampedro was one of only two amateurs to make the cut, joined by South Korea's Yunseo Yang (T-54).
