It didn't take long for Cameron Kuchar to get his first collegiate victory.
Kuchar, a freshman at TCU and son of nine-time PGA Tour winner Matt Kuchar, was co-medalist of the Bearcat Invitational on Tuesday at Coldstream Country Club outside of Cincinnati. Kuchar fired rounds of 68-67-69 to finish at 9 under overall, tied for first alongside Liberty's Michael Lugiano, who was a quarterfinalist at last month's U.S. Amateur.
It was the second start of Kuchar's college career. His first came in Japan, a T-30 finish at the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League Tournament.
Kuchar and Lugiano topped Memphis' Yixiang Wang by a stroke for co-medalist honors. Kuchar became the second TCU freshman to win a tournament in as many years, with sophomore Nathan
Miller being co-champion of the Watersound Invitational last season. Before Miller, a TCU freshman hadn't won a tournament since Julien Brun in 2012.
Liberty got the best of TCU in the team race, however, finishing at 15 under to win by three shots. Luke Libbey placed T-11 while U.S. Junior champion Noah Maclauchlan was T-14.
Matt Kuchar had a stellar college career at Georgia Tech, winning six times and earning the Fred Haskins Award in 1998. He also captured the U.S. Amateur title in 1997, a year after losing to Tiger Woods in the semifinals. Matt won low amateur honors at both the 1998 Masters and U.S. Open.
Cameron has a ways to go to catch pops on the accolades list, but winning in his second college event is a good start.
