In professional golf, Father Time remains undefeated. For 45-year-old veteran pro Ricky Barnes, the realization that time was moving on came in an unexpected place.
In late May, Barnes attended the Ben Hogan Award dinner at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, during the Charles Schwab Challenge. There, he encountered Luke Clanton, a Tour rookie who had won the award the previous year.
Clanton approached Barnes, the 2003 recipient, to tell him how much he had admired him growing up. It was a flattering moment, but Barnes' brother, Andy, who caddies for Charley Hoffman and had joined him at the dinner, delivered the observation that really stayed with him.
None of the year's three Hogan Award finalists — 2026 winner Jackson Koivun, Ben James
and Preston Stout — had even been born when Barnes won the award in 2003.
“And that's when I felt old in the game of golf,” Barnes said.
He has been smart to recognize that the window for his playing career already had been winding down, and we'll get to what's next for Barnes in due time.
But first, his is the story of arriving on the professional scene carrying the expectations of an accomplished amateur.
Ricky Barnes was once tabbed as the next great golfer
Coming out of the University of Arizona, he had established himself as one of the country's best young players, winning the U.S. Amateur in 2002 and low amateur honors at the Masters in 2003.
He went on to spend more than a decade on the PGA Tour, making 353 career starts. Yet the victories that many once imagined for him never materialized.
His closest brush with golf immortality came at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. Barnes held the 36-hole lead and put himself in position to win one of the sport's most prestigious championships. Over the weekend, however, Lucas Glover moved ahead and ultimately claimed the title. Barnes finished tied for second, the best result of his career.
“A second at the U.S. Open is not something that you hang your hat on,” Barnes said, “but it really was a big boost to my career.”
For a player who had once seemed destined for greatness, the result represented both achievement and unfinished business. He had proved he could compete with the best in the world, but he had also come painfully close to something that would have changed his career forever.
Looking back, Barnes can identify a stretch of five or six holes early in the final round at Bethpage that might have altered the outcome. He would gladly take a mulligan on those holes, knowing how much was at stake. But he does not view the missed opportunity as a failure of nerve or judgment.
His college coach, Rick LaRose, had taught him a lesson that remained with him long after his playing days reached a turning point.
“You can accept physical errors, but mental errors are tough to get over,” Barnes recalled.
U.S. Open near-miss was not only flash of potential
There were other moments when Barnes demonstrated just how good he could be.
In 2010, during the third round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, he found himself playing alongside Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson. Barnes had an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to shoot 61. He missed. As Woods walked past, he grinned and delivered a playful one-word assessment:
“Amateur.”
It was a teasing reference to his ball finishing on the low side of the hole, but the moment captured the intensity of competing alongside one of golf's greatest players. When friends later asked Barnes what it was like playing with Woods, his answer said everything about the pressure of the experience.
“It feels like Game 7 (of a playoff series), even on a Thursday,” he said.
That year, Barnes played well enough to be fitted for a U.S. Ryder Cup team uniform and attended a couple of team meetings. Ultimately, captain Corey Pavin did not select him.
“That was probably the one thing to really solidify a great career instead of I would say, a decent, a good career,” he concluded.
Barnes is mired in the 40-something vortex, where many tour pros are aging out at the highest level but the lifeline of PGA Tour Champions eligibility at age 50 still feels as if it is a lifetime away.
The changes to the Tour to counter the existential threat of LIV Golf have shrunk playing opportunities for competitors such as Barnes, who has made only three starts since 2023 and none during the 2026 season.
What is Ricky Barnes up to nowadays?
After years of competing on Tour, he recognized that playing a handful of tournaments each year was not a sustainable way to support his family. Rather than waiting for golf to offer another opportunity, he began building one of his own.
For the past few years, Barnes has worked with Forum Investment Group, a private real estate investment management firm specializing in multifamily properties. Serving as senior director of strategic partnerships, he has brought the relationship-building skills developed throughout his golf career, especially from participation in the weekly pro-am, into a different professional environment.
“We strictly keep in our honey hole with multi-family, ground-up developments,” he explained.
Barnes was already investing in the company when he became more involved in its business.
“So, I was kind of doing what I did in golf and betting on myself,” he said.
It was a fitting transition for someone who had spent his career taking calculated risks. The setting had changed, but the fundamental approach had not: trust the process, build relationships and put himself in a position to succeed.
Although his professional priorities have shifted, Barnes has no intention of leaving golf behind. He still plays at home in Arizona and enjoys summer trips to play in the cooler climes of Lake Tahoe. His relationships throughout the sport remain valuable, and he continues to find opportunities to participate in golf-related events.
One such opportunity arrived through the inaugural on!vitational, held Oct. 16-17 at TGL's SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The two-day golf and entertainment event brought together current and former professional athletes, prominent creators and adult participants aged 25 and older.
Barnes represented Troon, finishing second, alongside pal Parker McLachlin, a fellow groomsman for each other at their respective weddings, joining a field designed to blend competition with entertainment.
“We've known each other since college, and he called me and said he was able to invite someone like me and would I come? And I was like, absolutely, right up my alley,” Barnes recounted.
The invitation was a reminder that relationships built over years in golf can continue to open doors, even when the weekly grind of the Tour is no longer part of everyday life.
Ricky Barnes, the family chauffeur
The biggest change in Barnes' life may have less to do with business or golf than with his family. Married to Suzanne since 2010, he is now balancing his work in real estate with the demands of raising three children.
His afternoons are often occupied by school pickups, schedules and the everyday responsibilities that come with parenthood. He jokes about his new role with the same sense of humor that carried him through the highs and lows of professional golf.
“I like to call myself an Uber driver of my kids in the afternoon for pickup,” he said with a laugh when speaking to NCGA Golf Magazine. “So, while purses are going up on Tour, I'm now just driving Uber.”
It is further proof that Barnes's story is not simply about a golfer who failed to win at the highest level. It is about a professional athlete learning that a career can evolve without losing its meaning, and that the relationships, discipline and resilience developed through sport can be just as valuable away from competition.
Barnes may no longer be chasing birdies every weekend, but he is still betting on himself. And these days, some of his most important rounds begin after school lets out.
