Drake Harvey made history Tuesday morning at the 2026 U.S. Amateur.
The incoming freshman at BYU signed for 6-under 64 to complete his opening round at Merion Golf Club, a score achieved only twice in the storied history of USGA championships at the venue. He joins Lee Mackey Jr. (1950 U.S. Open) and Ben Crenshaw (1981 U.S. Open) as the only players to card rounds of 64 at Merion.
Harvey had eight birdies in his opening round with a pair of bogeys, too. Starting on No. 11, Harvey was 1 over after two holes before three birdies and another bogey on the 18th when
making the turn. He then finished his final seven holes in 5 under, with birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 8-10 to complete his round.
The U.S. Amateur is the 21st USGA championship that Merion has hosted and seventh U.S. Amateur, the most of any course.
Harvey tees off Tuesday morning at Philadelphia Country Club for his second round of stroke play. The top 64 players will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday at Merion. A playoff will be used in case of ties.
