PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL — The launch of the WTGL comes at a particularly significant moment for Lexi Thompson.
Thompson announced in August that she and husband Max Provost are expecting their first child, due in February. The Boca Raton resident plans to compete for Motor City Golf Club when the WTGL begins play Nov. 8, just a few months before her due date. The season does not end until Dec. 23.
At Sunday’s media day at SoFi Center, Thompson reflected on how pregnancy could affect her golf game, including whether the physical changes will alter her swing.
She said she doesn’t know exactly what to expect and will have to adjust as her pregnancy progresses, while embracing the opportunity to compete in a league she believes can bring something different
to professional women’s golf.
"I agreed to play on WTGL before I found out I was pregnant. But it wouldn't have changed my mind, honestly, unless it was right at the due date," Thompson said. "It was a no-brainer to be able to be part of WTGL and to be able to represent my team, and be partners with my teammates here. It's just a chance to be able to grow the women's game. You know, if I play all the matches, or if I just play one just to be able to grow the game, that's what it's all about.
"Coming in November or December, it might look a little bit different, I might swing a little bit differently. But hey, maybe it'll help. I just hope that I have very understanding partners by my side."
Thompson, 31, has played a part-time schedule on the LPGA the past two seasons and pulled out of an event in June with a hip injury. An 11-time winner on the LPGA, she wed Provost at La Casa Toscana, a private Tuscan estate in Southwest Florida, in March.
