Matt Hutchins is having a week he will never forget. Neither will any of his coworkers at Sand Valley Resort in Wisconsin.
The 29-year-old local caddie is one of eight quarterfinalists at the 45th U.S. Mid-Amateur, taking place at The Lido. Hutchins, who is dealing with a calf injury and essentially limped to victory in Tuesday's Round of 16, is continuing one of the best stories of the year.
Hutchins called for a medical timeout on the 13th tee and got treatment from a Lido member before grinding out the final six holes for a 1-up victory against Jordan Russell.
"It just felt like someone threw a ball off the back of my calf," Hutchins, who has never been injured playing golf or carrying clubs the past six years, said. "Just thankfully a member
was here – they're both sports therapists, physical therapists – so (I received) a little bit of a massage. I don't know just a little thing in my shoe to help it."
Longtime caddie master Vinny Lacerrawas one of numerous employees at The Lido who found time to watch Hutchins advance into Wednesday's quarterfinals. By day's end, only two players will remain, with a spot in the Masters on the line for the winner of Thursday's championship match.
Fellow Sand Valley caddie Arshan Mahjoubi is on Hutchins' bag this week, and the two are having the journey of the lifetime.
"It's just been awesome,” Hutchins said. “Yeah, just to be my home course and to be able to play some good golf, too. It's just been a treat.”
Hutchins is taking on Mikel Martinson of Throckmorton, Texas, in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
Perhaps the most notable quarterfinal matchup is between dentist Matt Vogt, who qualified for the U.S. Open last year, and Drew Kittleson, a three-time USGA runner-up. Grady Brame, who won the 2026 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship with partner Lawrence Allan, is also one of the quarterfinalists.
