The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have plenty of optimism surrounding their defense entering the 2026 season, but Pro Football Focus believes there is still a significant question mark at linebacker. PFF ranked Tampa Bay’s linebacker unit 23rd in the NFL in its latest positional rankings, putting the Buccaneers firmly in the bottom third of the league heading into the season.
The ranking largely reflects Tampa Bay entering a new era at the position after Buccaneer legend and captain Lavonte David's retirement. His departure leaves a massive leadership and production void, and PFF believes the Buccaneers are taking a considerable gamble with their replacements. Alex Anzalone is expected to step into a starting role after joining Tampa Bay in free agency.
PFF describes Anzalone as a solid starter and strong leader, noting that he has earned grades above 65.0 in each of the past three seasons. That consistency gives the Buccaneers an experienced player who can help stabilize the group, especially in coverage, where they have lacked.
The biggest question is Josiah Trotter Jr., as the second-round pick is expected to start alongside Anzalone, giving Tampa Bay a young linebacker with significant upside. Trotter was an excellent run defender in college, but PFF points out a major concern in his coverage ability, where he posted grades below 50.0 in each of his final two college seasons. The Buccaneers are essentially betting that Trotter's ability to attack the line of scrimmage, blitz, and make plays against the run will translate quickly while the coaching staff works with him on his coverage responsibilities. PFF's 23rd place ranking may be fair based on what the Buccaneers have proven so far. But if Trotter lives up to his potential, Anzalone delivers another steady season, and Tampa Bay finds quality depth through Sirvocea Dennis's development, the Bucs could have a chance to restore their LB unit's strength.
