Baker Mayfield returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' starting lineup Sunday after missing three games with an injured throwing thumb, but his first game back looked nothing like a typical performance from the veteran quarterback. Mayfield finished with just 64 passing yards against the Carolina Panthers
, yet Tampa Bay walked away with a convincing 43-13 victory in its first NFC South matchup of the season.Mayfield completed seven of 11 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a 109.7 passer rating without throwing an interception or taking a sack. His passing total accounted for less than 20 percent of Tampa Bay's 322 offensive yards, an unusual distribution for an offense that had struggled to establish consistency through the first
six weeks. However, the limited production didn't necessarily reflect poor quarterback play. The Buccaneers simply found something Carolina couldn't stop, and offensive coordinator Zach Robinson made sure they continued exploiting it.
Tampa Bay rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns on 49 attempts, with Bucky Irving leading the way with 106 yards and two scores. Kenneth Gainwell added 88 yards, while Sean Tucker broke free for a 46-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Buccaneers recorded 17 rushing first downs compared with just three through the air, allowing them to control possession for 35:57 while limiting the number of situations in which Mayfield needed to drop back.
The approach made sense considering the circumstances surrounding Mayfield's return. The veteran was still recovering from a thumb injury on his throwing hand, while Tampa Bay was also without wide receiver Emeka Egbuka and starting right tackle Luke Goedeke. Rather than asking Mayfield to overcome those limitations with an aggressive passing attack, Robinson built the offense around a productive running game and let his quarterback operate without unnecessary pressure.
Mayfield's biggest contribution came just before halftime, when he escaped pressure to his right and connected with Tez Johnson for a 14-yard touchdown. The completion marked the 200th touchdown pass of his NFL career and extended Tampa Bay's advantage to 33-6, capping a first half in which the Buccaneers had already established complete control.
Although his passing statistics were modest, Mayfield handled the offense efficiently and avoided the mistakes that had contributed to Tampa Bay's struggles earlier in the season. He didn't force throws into coverage, protected the football, and appeared comfortable moving within the pocket despite his injured hand. The offensive line also kept him from being sacked, an important improvement for a unit that had experienced considerable protection issues entering the matchup.
Tampa Bay's defense helped make the conservative offensive approach possible. The Buccaneers forced four turnovers, recorded five sacks, and scored on Calijah Kancey's 32-yard fumble return. With Carolina struggling to protect Bryce Young and Tampa Bay building a substantial advantage before halftime, Robinson had little reason to increase Mayfield's passing workload.
The Buccaneers will eventually need more air production, especially against opponents capable of slowing down Irving and the rushing attack. Mayfield's 64 passing yards don't prove Tampa Bay has solved every offensive issue, and the team cannot expect to rush for more than 250 yards every week. However, Sunday's performance showed that Robinson can adjust his approach to the personnel available rather than forcing the offense into situations that don't favor its strengths.
For Mayfield, the biggest accomplishment wasn't reaching a particular passing total. It was returning to the field, managing the offense without a turnover and helping Tampa Bay secure a much-needed divisional victory. As his throwing hand continues to heal and the Buccaneers get healthier around him, the passing game should have opportunities to become a larger part of the offense. Against Carolina, though, 64 yards were more than enough.
