The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
have quietly developed one of the NFL's most dominant run defenses through the first five weeks of the 2026 season, and Tykee Smith has been a major reason why. While Vita Vea and the defensive front typically receive most of the recognition for Tampa Bay's success against the run, Smith has established himself as one of the most physical and reliable defenders on the roster.According to Pro Football Focus, Smith currently leads all NFL safeties with an impressive 91.5 run defense grade. That puts him first among 89 qualifying safeties, further highlighting just how valuable the third-year defender has become to Todd Bowles' defense. Smith's production goes beyond simply making tackles. His ability to recognize running
plays, attack downhill, and navigate traffic near the line of scrimmage has made him an important part of Tampa Bay's defensive identity. Across five games, Smith has recorded 18 solo tackles, 8 defensive stops, and just 3 missed tackles on 294 defensive snaps.
Perhaps his most impressive performance came against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4. Despite Tampa Bay's 17-14 loss, Smith earned a remarkable 95.2 run-defense grade over 24 snaps. He also finished with a 90.9 overall defensive grade and did not miss a tackle on 59 defensive snaps. His emergence has helped Tampa Bay rank second in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (72.8) and yards allowed per carry (3.3). Only the Jacksonville Jaguars rank ahead of the Buccaneers in both categories, showing just how difficult it has become for opposing offenses to establish the ground game against Tampa Bay.
What makes Smith particularly valuable is his versatility. Bowles can deploy him closer to the line of scrimmage, allow him to attack gaps, or use him as an additional pass rusher. Against Dallas, Smith generated five pressures on seven blitzing opportunities, demonstrating that his impact isn't limited to stopping running backs. With Lavonte David no longer anchoring the defense, Tampa Bay needs younger players capable of stepping into leadership roles, and Smith is making a strong case to become one of those foundational pieces.
