There comes a point when losing football games becomes secondary to how they are lost. Sunday's 26-19 overtime defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers should represent that breaking point. Blowing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead at home is embarrassing enough, but watching another winnable game disappear because of poor adjustments, questionable decisions, and repeated mistakes should force ownership to seriously consider changes to this coaching staff.
Tampa Bay entered the fourth quarter leading 16-3. Its defense had sacked Aaron Rodgers five times through three quarters, generated a turnover and largely controlled Pittsburgh's offense. Then everything unraveled. The Steelers scored on five consecutive possessions, including overtime, while Tampa Bay's
defense suddenly looked incapable of getting off the field. That is where Todd Bowles deserves significant criticism. How does a defense dominate for three quarters, only to allow an opponent to completely dictate the final 15 minutes and overtime? Pittsburgh adjusted, found ways to neutralize the pass rush and repeatedly attacked Tampa Bay's coverage. Bowles, the head coach and defensive play caller, had no effective response.
The offensive collapse was equally concerning. Zac Robinson's unit managed just three points in the second half despite entering the fourth quarter with a commanding advantage. Jalon Daniels threw two interceptions, but placing the entire blame on an undrafted rookie in his third career start ignores the coaching staff's responsibility to put him in manageable situations. Even the game's final offensive play exposed a familiar problem. Jalen Ramsey came untouched off the edge to sack Daniels on fourth down, a play nearly identical to the protection breakdown that ended Tampa Bay's loss to Green Bay. When the same mistake ends multiple games, it is no longer simply a player execution issue. It becomes a preparation problem.
The Buccaneers are now 1-5, have suffered multiple double-digit second-half collapses at home, and continue to repeat mistakes that should have been corrected weeks ago. Bowles has repeatedly emphasized execution and finishing games, but those explanations mean increasingly little when the results never change. At some point, accountability must extend beyond the players. Robinson deserves scrutiny for an offense that cannot consistently adjust to pressure, while Bowles must answer for the defensive breakdowns, game management, and overall direction of this team. Ownership does not need to wait until the season is mathematically lost to recognize what is happening. Whether that means replacing coordinators or moving on from Bowles entirely, meaningful changes are becoming increasingly difficult to avoid.
