It didn't take long for Josiah Trotter Jr. to emerge as one of the most intriguing rookies at Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp. CBS Sports recently highlighted Trotter as one of the NFL's top rookie starters to watch during training camp, and it's easy to see why.
The second-round pick has been battling for a significant role at inside linebacker and has already made a strong impression through the first week of practices.
Trotter's performance has backed up the hype. The rookie turned heads during the Buccaneers' first padded practice by recording back-to-back tackles for loss, showcasing the downhill mentality, speed, and physicality that made him one of the top linebackers in the 2026 NFL Draft.
He's consistently played fast, trusted his instincts,
and looked comfortable operating in Todd Bowles' aggressive defensive scheme.
The Buccaneers entered the offseason looking to add more athleticism and playmaking ability to the middle of their defense, and Trotter has flashed both traits early in camp. Whether he's attacking the line of scrimmage against the run or flowing sideline to sideline, the rookie has shown he belongs in the conversation for meaningful defensive snaps.
Following Lavonte David's retirement, Tampa Bay has a void to fill at linebacker, and Trotter appears determined to make the coaching staff's decision a difficult one as to who starts alongside offseason addition Alex Anzalone. While veterans still have a role to play, the rookie has done everything asked of him through the opening stretch of camp.
Of course, training camp is only the first step. Pads are on, but preseason games will provide an even better measuring stick for where Trotter stands in his development. Still, earning national recognition this early in camp speaks to the impression he's already made.
If Trotter continues stacking practices the way he has so far, the Buccaneers may not have to wait long before their second-round pick is running out with the first-team defense when Week 1 arrives.
