Baker Mayfield finished Sunday's 16-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons without completing a pass, making the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the first NFL team since 1974 to win a game with zero completions and zero passing yards.
According to ESPN's Field Yates, the last team to do so was the Buffalo Bills, who defeated the New York Jets 16-12 on Sept. 29, 1974.
The Buccaneers also became the first team since the 1945 Pittsburgh Steelers to win by double digits without completing a pass, according to NFL Researcher. Pittsburgh defeated the Chicago Cardinals 23-0 in Week 8.
Mayfield finished 0-for-3, targeting Ted Hurst, Chris Godwin and Kenneth Gainwell once apiece. He was also sacked once for a two-yard loss, leaving Tampa Bay with minus-two net passing
yards.
Heavy rain made conditions difficult at Raymond James Stadium, and Mayfield mishandled multiple snaps, though he recovered every one. Tampa Bay made little effort to establish a passing attack, instead relying on a running game that had produced 258 yards against Carolina the previous week, and that strategy paid off.
The Buccaneers rushed for a franchise-record 324 yards on 56 attempts against Atlanta. Bucky Irving recorded a career-high 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Gainwell added a career-best 140 yards on 25 attempts. Mayfield contributed 14 rushing yards on four carries.
Tampa Bay's defense allowed the offense to maintain that approach all game, as linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted Michael Penix Jr. twice, and cornerbacks Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum each added one interception. Atlanta finished with 224 total yards and failed to convert any of its 12 third-down attempts.
The Buccaneers have now won two straight games despite Mayfield completing just seven passes for 64 yards in the two contests. Tampa Bay has rushed for 582 yards in that stretch, while its defense has allowed 13 combined points.
