Tristan Wirfs continues to set the standard for offensive line play in Tampa Bay, and his latest Pro Football Focus ranking is another reminder of just how valuable he is to the Buccaneers. Through the 2026 season, Wirfs has an 86.4 pass-blocking grade, the second-highest among NFL tackles with at least 200 snaps. Only San Francisco 49ers tackle Trent Williams is ahead of him, leading the rankings with an 89.1 grade. Wirfs sits ahead of established names like Garett Bolles, Amarius Mims, Brian O'Neill, and Penei Sewell, putting him in some impressive company.
The ranking matters because it speaks to Wirfs' consistency in one of football's most demanding positions. Protecting the quarterback requires more than winning individual matchups. It takes
proper technique, footwork, hand placement, and the ability to recognize and react to different defensive looks. Wirfs has consistently shown those qualities throughout his career, making life considerably easier for whoever lines up behind him. Having that kind of reliability at left tackle is a significant advantage. Whether Baker Mayfield is operating from the pocket or extending plays outside the structure of the offense, knowing his blindside is protected lets the quarterback work through his progressions without constantly worrying about pressure coming off the edge.
Wirfs' importance also extends beyond his individual pass protection numbers. He is a cornerstone of an offensive line that has become one of Tampa Bay's biggest strengths. The Buccaneers have invested heavily in building an offense that can control games physically, and that starts with dependable players up front who can win their assignments. At this point, Wirfs' presence near the top of these rankings shouldn't surprise anyone. He has established himself as one of the league's premier offensive tackles, and his continued performance at this level reinforces why Tampa Bay made him a long-term centerpiece of its offensive line. The Buccaneers have plenty of moving pieces to figure out as they navigate the season, but they can feel confident about one thing. When it comes to protecting the quarterback, they have one of the best tackles in football.
