The Tampa Bay Buccaneers desperately needed someone to step up offensively against the Dallas Cowboys, and Bucky Irving answered the call with arguably the best performance of his young career. Not only did Irving help Tampa Bay secure its first victory of the 2026 season, but he also finished Week 5 as the NFL's leading rusher.
Irving finished Thursday night's 24-16 victory with a career-high 165 rushing yards on 21 carries, averaging an impressive 7.9 yards per attempt. He also found the end zone twice, once on the ground and once through the air, finishing with 175 total yards from scrimmage. His 165 rushing yards led all NFL players in Week 5, ahead of Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who finished with 151. The biggest moment came
on the opening play of the second half when Irving broke free for a 72-yard run, completely shifting the momentum in Tampa Bay's favor. That run was the eighth-longest in franchise history and helped set up Emeka Egbuka's 14-yard touchdown that gave the Buccaneers their first lead of the game.
What makes Irving's performance even more encouraging is how much Tampa Bay had struggled to establish its running game in previous weeks. Against Minnesota and Green Bay, Irving combined for just 107 rushing yards on 31 carries, averaging 3.5 yards per attempt. Against Dallas, he nearly surpassed that combined production on one explosive run and consistently found opportunities behind an offensive line that finally created space. Irving also reached another impressive milestone, surpassing 2,000 career rushing yards in just his 32nd NFL game. That tied Warrick Dunn for the fourth-fastest player in Buccaneers history to reach the mark, further establishing Irving as one of the most productive young running backs the franchise has had.
With rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels still developing, Irving's ability to take over games becomes even more important. His explosiveness, vision, and ability to create yards after contact make him a legitimate weapon for offensive coordinator Zac Robinson to build the offense around. Tampa Bay shouldn't need a 165-yard performance from Irving every week to remain competitive, but Week 5 reminded everyone what happens when the Buccaneers consistently get their best offensive playmaker involved. If Tampa Bay hopes to build on its first victory, feeding Irving needs to remain a priority.
