The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have struggled to find consistency through the opening weeks of the 2026 NFL season, but their defense has quietly been one of the league's better units at getting off the field. According to TruMedia statistics shared by Pro Football Network, Tampa Bay entered Week 5 ranked seventh in the NFL in combined third- and fourth-down conversion rate allowed.
Opposing offenses converted just 36.8% of those opportunities against the Buccaneers through their first four games. Only the Minnesota Vikings (23.3%), Chicago Bears (23.8%), Indianapolis Colts (30.4%), Los Angeles Rams (33.3%), Cleveland Browns (34.5%) and Seattle Seahawks (35.5%) posted better marks.
The numbers are encouraging for a Tampa Bay defense that has been forced
to compensate for an offense still searching for answers. Through Week 4, the Buccaneers ranked fourth in total defense, allowing 282.8 yards per game, and third against the run, allowing 78.5 yards per game. They were also sixth in third-down conversion rate allowed at 32.7%, according to the team's official Week 5 game preview.
That success hasn't always translated to the scoreboard. Tampa Bay entered its Thursday night matchup with Dallas allowing 24 points per game, ranking 20th in the league. The Buccaneers also ranked 25th in sacks per pass attempt, highlighting their difficulty finishing plays in the opposing backfield despite their success limiting yardage.
The defensive production became even more important in Tampa Bay's 24-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5. The Buccaneers forced three second-half turnovers, including interceptions by Yaya Diaby and Alex Anzalone. Anzalone's interception with 1:16 remaining helped seal Tampa Bay's first victory of the season after an 0-4 start.
While the TruMedia rankings reflect the first four games and do not include the Dallas victory, they provide some context for what the Buccaneers have done well defensively. Tampa Bay has shown it can limit rushing production and get off the field on critical downs. Thursday's win offered another encouraging sign, with the defense finally producing the takeaways needed to help close out a game.
