Ted Hurst's impressive preseason continued Tuesday, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver turned in another strong performance during the team's first joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hurst has quickly become one of the more talked-about players in Tampa Bay's receiving corps, and his latest showing against Jacksonville's defense provides another encouraging sign as he competes for a meaningful role in the Buccaneers' offense.
The third-round pick has consistently shown an ability to make plays down the field, using his 6'4 frame, speed, and impressive ball skills to create problems for defensive backs. Tampa Bay drafted Hurst because of that combination of size and explosiveness, and he has wasted little time showing it off.
This wasn't Hurst's first strong performance against another team this summer, either. He made plays during Tampa Bay's joint practices with the New York Jets earlier in August and has continued to make his presence felt throughout training camp.
Joint practices give players a chance to face a different defensive scheme and personnel group, providing a better test than working exclusively against their own teammates. Hurst getting open and making plays against Jacksonville's defense is another positive development for a rookie who is quickly gaining momentum. Hurst has also continued developing his chemistry with Mayfield throughout camp, and Mayfield has shown a willingness to look his way, as the rookie has repeatedly made difficult catches and found ways to create separation. Another big day against Jacksonville only adds to the growing evidence that the Buccaneers may have found an immediate contributor with their third-round pick. If Hurst continues performing at this level when the regular season arrives, his role in Tampa Bay's offense could be the X Factor.
