The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made significant investments in their defense this offseason, but according to Pro Football Focus, one area could still become a major concern in 2026: the defensive line. PFF identified the defensive line as Tampa Bay's biggest concern heading into the season, pointing to both the immediate need for more production and the long-term uncertainty surrounding the group.
At first glance, that may seem surprising considering the Buccaneers have one of the league's best interior defenders in Vita Vea and just added first-round edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. However, PFF's concern goes beyond the talent currently on the roster. Vea remains a major piece of the defense, but his run defense grade dropped to 62.5 in 2025, his lowest
mark in three seasons. Tampa Bay will need to see that improve, especially since it relies on him to anchor the middle of the defense.
Then there is the long-term picture. Vea and new additions A'shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches are all over the age of 31. Tampa Bay could potentially be looking at significant changes along the interior next offseason as they try to get younger, much like they have at other positions throughout the last several seasons. The edge position carries its own concern. PFF noted that Yaya Diaby was the only Buccaneers edge rusher to record more than 35 pressures last season. Diaby is also entering the final year of his contract, creating another potential problem if Tampa Bay can't secure a long-term agreement while others like Baker Mayfield and Chase McLaughlin also look for extensions.
The Buccaneers have plenty of talent along their defensive front. The concern is whether they have enough proven production and long-term stability. If Bain becomes the pass-rushing force Tampa Bay expects, Diaby takes another step now having a true running mate, and Vea returns to his dominant form against the run, the defensive line could turn from PFF's biggest concern into one of the team's biggest strengths.
