The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spent the past several years trying to balance keeping their core together with avoiding the difficult salary cap situation they faced after the Tom Brady era. According to a recent CBS Sports ranking, that approach has Tampa Bay sitting almost exactly in the middle of the NFL in terms of actual money spent on the roster.
CBS Sports ranked the Buccaneers 21st in the NFL in active cash spending for the 2026 season at $309.4 million, slightly above the NFL's $301.2 million salary cap, although cash spending and salary cap accounting are different. Signing bonuses and other contract intricacies let teams spread cap charges across multiple seasons, even though the cash is paid immediately. CBS Sports used active cash spending for its
rankings because it provides another look at how much ownership is actually investing in the current roster. Tampa Bay's position is interesting considering how much established talent remains on the roster. The Bucs haven't needed to operate like some of the league's biggest spenders, with Dallas leading the NFL at $372.8 million and Seattle sitting second at $369.7 million. Instead, general manager Jason Licht has continued to lean heavily on drafting and developing players while paying the core pieces to remain competitive.
That approach has allowed the Buccaneers to avoid mortgaging their future while still building a roster to compete in the NFC South. Tampa Bay is also spending less than division rival Carolina, which ranks 20th at $311.2 million, but more than New Orleans at $291.3 million and Atlanta at $270.3 million. Sitting 21st doesn't necessarily mean the Buccaneers have been unwilling to spend. If anything, it shows how much value Tampa Bay has created through the draft and its ability to retain players without consistently operating near the top of the league in cash spending. For a team that has spent years working its way out of the financial consequences of an aggressive Super Bowl window, being competitive without having one of the NFL's most expensive rosters is a pretty good place to be.
