This matchup stands out for one reason: Carolina allows 5.12 yards per carry, the worst in the NFL, while Irving has averaged 136.0 yards from scrimmage over his four career games against the Panthers. He has recorded two 100-yard rushing performances against them since entering the league in 2024, making Carolina one of the more favorable opponents on his schedule.
Irving has already had a big performance this season, reminding everyone how dangerous he can be when the blocking gives him room to work. Against Dallas in Week Five, he rushed for a career-high 165 yards, including a 72-yard run, and finished with 175 yards from scrimmage. He also forced 10 missed tackles and gained 122 rushing yards after those misses, according to Next Gen Stats.
That combination of vision, sharp cuts, and ability to escape contact makes him particularly dangerous against a defense surrendering five yards every time an opponent hands off the football. The challenge will be creating those opportunities against Carolina’s defensive front. Derrick Brown is a disruptive presence inside, capable of occupying blockers and allowing linebackers to flow freely to the ball. Tampa Bay guard Cody Mauch will have a key assignment in that matchup, and the offensive line must create enough movement for Irving to reach the second level before Carolina’s defenders close the space.
Getting Irving established could also help stabilize a Buccaneers offense that has struggled with pressure. Tampa Bay has allowed 22 sacks through six games, putting it on pace to surpass the franchise’s previous single-season high of 56. A productive ground game can make the defense respect the run, create more manageable passing situations, and reduce the burden on Baker Mayfield as he returns from his thumb injury. At 1-5, Tampa Bay needs more than isolated explosive plays. It needs a reliable way to control the game, sustain drives, and keep its defense off the field. Irving has already demonstrated that he can produce against Carolina, and the Panthers’ run defense gives him a clear path to another impactful performance. If the Buccaneers win the battle up front and feed Irving consistently, he could be the key to Tampa Bay's best chance to leave Charlotte with a divisional win.
