The Tampa Bay Buccaneers leaned on their running game and defense to shut out the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, earning their first home victory of the season.
Tampa Bay rushed for a franchise-record 324 yards despite heavy rain, with Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell both setting career highs. Irving finished with 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 attempts. Together, the two gained 310 rushing yards and 14 rushing first downs.
The performance continued a trend established in Tampa Bay's Week 7 victory over Carolina, when the Buccaneers rushed for 258 yards. In two straight wins, Tampa Bay has amassed 582 rushing yards, showing its ground game can produce regardless of which
running back carries the load.
Irving's 46-yard run in the third quarter helped spark a 90-yard touchdown drive, which he finished with a four-yard score. Gainwell also ran for 28 yards on the same possession. Sean Tucker did not carry the ball at all in this contest.
Baker Mayfield finished 0-for-3 passing, but Tampa Bay relied exclusively on the ground game in difficult weather conditions. That puts Mayfield under 70 passing yards in the last two Buccaneers wins.
Defensively, linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted Michael Penix Jr. twice in the first quarter, while cornerbacks Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum each added an interception to keep the Bucs defense on a roll. The Buccaneers' defense dictated this game as Penix finished 8-of-24 for 125 yards and four interceptions.
Tampa Bay recorded no sacks but still disrupted Atlanta's offense enough to create some off-platform throws for Penix. David Walker and Rueben Bain Jr. generated pressure, while A'Shawn Robinson deflected a third-down pass late in the fourth quarter that almost was intercepted. The Buccaneers held Bijan Robinson to 76 yards on 19 carries and prevented Atlanta from converting any of its 12 third-down attempts.
Tampa Bay's offense didn't miss the shutout; the Buccaneers settled for three Chase McLaughlin field goals, including two following Anzalone's interceptions. Irving also lost a fumble in the first quarter that went through the end zone for a touchback that would have been a touchdown if Irving could have held onto the ball. Atlanta finished with 224 total yards, and Tampa Bay controlled the ball for 35:16.
After consecutive wins over Carolina and Atlanta, Tampa Bay has built a productive rushing attack, while its defense has recorded 10 sacks and four interceptions over the two games.
