The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 26-19 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers offered few offensive positives, but Luke Goedeke's performance against T.J. Watt deserves recognition. Facing one of the NFL's most accomplished pass rushers, Goedeke delivered another strong pass-protection performance and continues to establish himself as one of Tampa Bay's most dependable offensive linemen.
Watt entered Sunday's matchup with 4.5 sacks through five games, presenting a significant challenge for a Buccaneers offense already struggling with protection breakdowns. His explosiveness, power, and ability to anticipate the snap have made him one of football's most difficult individual assignments. Goedeke understood the challenge, but his performance demonstrated
why Tampa Bay should feel confident about its long-term future at right tackle. Goedeke finished Sunday with a 74.1 pass-blocking grade across 53 pass-protection snaps, allowing just two pressures and no sacks. Those numbers are even more impressive given the caliber of Pittsburgh's defensive front and the number of passing situations Tampa Bay faced throughout the afternoon. Against a player like Watt, maintaining pocket integrity requires disciplined footwork, controlled hand placement, and the ability to counter multiple rushing techniques. Watt thrives when tackles overset to protect against his outside speed, creating opportunities to attack inside. Goedeke's patience and ability to avoid costly sacks were particularly valuable.
The performance also continued an impressive individual streak. Over six games, Goedeke has surrendered zero sacks on 259 pass-blocking snaps, allowing only seven pressures. That's a pressure rate of about 2.7%, remarkable consistency for a tackle who regularly faces some of the league's most dangerous edge rushers. What makes Goedeke's performance especially frustrating from Tampa Bay's perspective is the contrast between individual execution and the offense's broader protection issues. While Goedeke handled his responsibilities against Watt, the Buccaneers once again watched their final offensive possession end because an unblocked defensive back rushed off the edge. Communication failures, protection assignments, and an inability to recognize pressure have repeatedly undermined otherwise solid blocking. Goedeke continues to prove he can handle difficult assignments without becoming a liability, and his performance against Watt deserves considerably more attention.
