The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shut out the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 in Week 8, relying on a franchise-record rushing performance and four interceptions to secure their second consecutive victory.
According to the official NFL gamebook, Tampa Bay played 60 offensive snaps and 53 defensive snaps. The distribution highlighted an even running back rotation, increased tight end usage, Antoine Winfield Jr.'s return, and an injury that forced changes along the defensive front.
Irving and Gainwell split the backfield
Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell each played 30 offensive snaps, splitting the backfield workload evenly.
Irving rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 attempts. Together, they accounted for 310 of Tampa Bay's franchise-record 324 rushing
yards.
Gainwell received more opportunities late as the Buccaneers protected their lead. Sean Tucker did not play an offensive snap.
Tight ends dominate offensive personnel
Cade Otton played 57 snaps (95%), while Payne Durham logged 42 (70%) and Bauer Sharp contributed 19 (32%).
The heavy tight end usage reflected Tampa Bay's commitment to the ground game. The Buccaneers attempted just three passes, with Baker Mayfield finishing without a completion.
Chris Godwin led the receivers with 49 snaps (82%). Tez Johnson and Ted Hurst III each played 25 (42%), while David Sills logged 22 (37%). With so few passing attempts, their playing time reflected formation and blocking responsibilities more than receiving opportunities.
Winfield returns to a full-time role
Antoine Winfield Jr. returned from a three-game absence and played 51 of 53 defensive snaps (96%). He recorded seven tackles, tying rookie cornerback Jacob Parrish for the team lead.
Winfield's return significantly reduced Ifeatu Melifonwu's workload. Melifonwu played 55 of 56 defensive snaps against Carolina in Week 7 but logged just five snaps (9%) against Atlanta.
Alex Anzalone and Zyon McCollum played all 53 defensive snaps, while Parrish matched Winfield with 51. Anzalone intercepted Michael Penix Jr. twice, with Parrish and McCollum accounting for Tampa Bay's other two interceptions.
Diaby injury forces changes to edge rotation
Yaya Diaby played just seven defensive snaps (13%) before leaving Sunday's game with a knee injury. He was ruled out and did not return.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Diaby is believed to have suffered an MCL sprain and was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. The initial hope is that the injury will not sideline him for long, although the severity hasn't been confirmed.
With Diaby unavailable, Rueben Bain Jr. led Tampa Bay's edge rushers with 35 snaps (66%), followed by David Walker with 25 (47%), Al-Quadin Muhammad with 23 (43%), and Anthony Nelson with 16 (30%).
The Buccaneers finished without a sack but held Atlanta scoreless, intercepted Penix four times, and limited Bijan Robinson to 76 rushing yards on 19 carries.
Diaby's status will be a key development ahead of Week 9 against Chicago, especially after his three-sack performance against Carolina. Tampa Bay improved to 3-5 with the victory and is a half-game out of first place in the NFC South.
