The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't make an outside addition during the NFL's initial waiver period following roster cutdowns.
Tampa Bay submitted no successful claims after trimming its roster to 53 players, meaning the Bucs will move forward, at least initially(aside from practice squad signings), with the group they assembled coming out of training camp and the preseason.
While Tampa Bay didn't bring anyone in through waivers, it did lose one player from its cuts.
Linebacker Jack Pyburn was claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs, making him the only Buccaneers player picked up during the first run through waivers. The undrafted rookie made a strong impression during the preseason, finishing with an NFL-leading four sacks before Tampa Bay waived him at
the deadline.
Pyburn's situation was particularly interesting because his options extended beyond trying to stick in the NFL. He said returning to college remained a possibility if he didn't make an NFL roster. Kansas City's claim takes that decision off the table for now and gives Pyburn another opportunity to earn a place in the NFL.
For the Buccaneers, making no claims doesn't necessarily mean the roster is finished. Players who cleared waivers can now join practice squads, while veterans who aren't subject to the waiver process remain available as free agents. Tampa Bay can also continue reshaping the bottom of its roster as Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals approaches.
For now, though, the Bucs' first post-cutdown movement went the other direction, with Kansas City taking a chance on one of Tampa Bay's most productive preseason defenders.
