David Walker’s stat line from Tampa Bay’s 24-16 win over Dallas does not jump off the page, but his impact certainly did.
The rookie outside linebacker finished with one assisted tackle and one quarterback hit while playing just 19 defensive snaps, or 32% of Tampa Bay’s defensive workload. Those numbers make his night look quiet, but the official play-by-play shows Walker affecting Dak Prescott in some of the game’s biggest passing situations.
Late in the second quarter, Walker pressured Prescott on third-and-6 from the Tampa Bay 23-yard line, forcing an incompletion that kept Dallas to a field goal. Then, with the Cowboys trying to rally late in the fourth quarter, Walker again got pressure on Prescott on a deep throw intended for George Pickens.
Dallas was also called for offensive holding on the play.
Those two plays matched what showed up throughout the game. Walker repeatedly created problems on stunts and inside rushes, using his quickness to cross the face of Dallas’ blockers and get Prescott off his spot. He did not finish with a sack, but pressure does not always have to end with the quarterback on the ground to change a possession.
That was especially important for a Buccaneers defense that did not record a sack all night. Tampa Bay still intercepted Prescott twice, broke up 10 passes and held Dallas to 16 points. Walker’s ability to generate pressure without needing a huge snap count was part of why the Bucs were able to make Prescott uncomfortable even without padding the sack column.
Walker also contributed on special teams, helping make the tackle on KaVontae Turpin’s third-quarter kickoff return. For a player who saw fewer than a third of Tampa Bay’s defensive snaps, he consistently found ways to show up.
The box score may only show one quarterback hit, but Walker’s night was another reminder that pressure production can be more valuable than the final stat line suggests. If he continues to affect quarterbacks with limited opportunities, Tampa Bay may have a reason to increase his defensive workload moving forward.
