Six games into the 2026 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face a reality few expected at the start of the year. At 1-5, sitting last in the NFC South and coming off another devastating collapse against Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay is approaching a crossroads. The playoffs are not mathematically out of reach, but the organization must decide whether it genuinely believes this coaching staff can salvage the season or whether it is time to start making decisions with 2027 in mind. Sunday's 26-19 overtime loss to Pittsburgh illustrated the problem. Tampa Bay built a 16-3 lead entering the fourth quarter, then surrendered 23 points over the rest of the game. It was another example of a talented roster failing to finish, a pattern that has become uncomfortable
under Todd Bowles.
The immediate priority is determining whether this season is still salvageable. Tampa Bay has yet to play a divisional opponent, meaning all six NFC South matchups remain on the schedule. With Carolina leading the division 3-2, the Buccaneers are only 2.5 games out of first. Their upcoming matchups against Carolina and Atlanta offer a chance to close that gap, but losing either would make an already difficult climb much steeper. Baker Mayfield's potential return also complicates the organization's direction. The veteran quarterback is expected to resume practicing this week after missing three games with a dislocated thumb. While Jalon Daniels has shown intriguing mobility and flashes of potential, his five interceptions over three starts have exposed the growing pains of an inexperienced quarterback. Mayfield could stabilize the offense, but his return alone cannot correct the protection breakdowns, questionable play calling, and defensive collapses that have plagued this team.
Regardless of the quarterback situation, Tampa Bay needs to begin prioritizing its younger talent. David Walker has recorded four sacks through six games despite limited opportunities, while Josiah Trotter and Jacob Parrish have established themselves as legitimate defensive building blocks. Those players should get more responsibility, not remain restricted by veteran rotations. The November 3 trade deadline presents another difficult decision. If Tampa Bay keeps losing, general manager Jason Licht must consider moving veterans who don't fit the organization's long-term plans rather than clinging to an increasingly unrealistic playoff push. Ultimately, the biggest decision concerns Bowles. Tampa Bay can't keep letting the same coaching deficiencies undermine a roster with legitimate talent. If the next two divisional games repeat the same, ownership should seriously consider starting its search for a new direction.
