The Baltimore Ravens have spent the first part of the week doing what every NFL team must do after a disappointing performance. They're having difficult conversations,reviewing mistakes, and preparing to move forward.
For head coach Jesse Minter, however, adversity's value extends beyond correcting what went wrong on Sunday. He believes the experience gave him a better understanding of the team he is coaching.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday before Baltimore's trip to Brazil for a Week 3 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Minter explained that difficult moments often reveal more about a team than victories do.
"I learned that we can go through hard stuff. We can tell the truth. We can have hard conversations, and we can talk things out. Sometimes
you have to go through something hard when you are new and everything is like a honeymoon phase until you really hit adversity... I really liked the way that we approached Monday, yesterday, and today with our mentality"
The comment offered an interesting glimpse into where the Ravens are two weeks into the season. Minter is still establishing his culture and identity as Baltimore's head coach, and Sunday's disappointment represented the first real obstacle his team has encountered together.
Rather than focusing solely on the result, Minter appeared more interested in something else. He wanted to learn how his players and coaching staff would respond afterward.
"The message is this is a week-to-week league, and every week is a new opportunity. It is really about going 1-and-0 every week... The teams that improve as the year goes on, learn from things that happen to them both good and bad, and get a little bit better each week, are the ones that ultimately at the end of the year, are playing the best. It is a process. It is a process to learn exactly how we want to prepare and do things and operate."
That message becomes particularly important this week. The Ravens face a difficult challenge against a talented Cowboys team in Brazil, and there will be little sympathy for what happened the week before. The next opponent presents a new test, one that will require Baltimore to apply whatever lessons were learned quickly.

Minter acknowledged that building a winner is an ongoing process. His comments echoed something Minter has repeated throughout the season. The Ravens are still discovering exactly who they want to be under a new coaching staff. Adversity, while unwelcome, can often accelerate that process.
Whether Sunday's frustrations become a valuable lesson or the beginning of a larger trend won't be determined by what was said this week. It will be determined by how Baltimore responds when it takes the field against Dallas. For Minter, that response begins with a group willing to be honest about its shortcomings and committed to improving.
