Divisional games will often unfold differently than expected, but the Baltimore Ravens may think about this one for a few more days. They had the Cleveland Browns right where they wanted them, building a 10-point lead before the game was 11 minutes old.
Their defense controlled much of the afternoon, but mistakes mounted. The offense failed to deliver when it mattered most. The 13-10 defeat reminded everyone that even a strong defensive performance can go to waste when the entire team cannot finish the job.
There were positives to take from the performance. A few encouraging developments emerged amid the frustration, but the Ravens also have plenty to address before their next AFC North matchup. Here’s a closer look at the bright spots, costly
mistakes, and late-game breakdowns that defined Baltimore’s loss.
The good things we noticed from the Ravens in Week 6
- Zay Flowers continues to create with the ball in his hands. Flowers finished with six receptions for 66 yards, including a 31-yard catch that showcased his ability to turn a routine opportunity into an explosive play. His production was one of the few consistent positives for an offense that struggled to generate momentum after its opening possessions.
- Josh Cuevas celebrates his first career touchdown. Cuevas caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Huntley, helping Baltimore establish an early lead. Ozzie Newsome might not have liked the final score, but as a fellow former Alabama Crimson Tide tight end, the legend may have found added reason to appreciate the rookie's first trip to the end zone.
- Baltimore continues to improve its penalty discipline. The Ravens were flagged just six times for 29 yards against Cleveland after committing five penalties in Week 5. The improvement hasn't eliminated every costly mistake, but limiting penalties remains a positive step as Baltimore looks to clean up its overall execution.
- Defensive standouts: Calais Campbell, Trey Hendrickson, Roquan Smith and Keyon Martin each recorded a sack; Nnamdi Madubuike and Tavius Robinson shared another. Kyle Hamilton contributed three tackles for loss.
The bad news from Baltimore's loss in Cleveland
- Tyler Loop leaves points on the field. Loop missed a 49-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Given his recent success, the miss reminded everyone that consistency matters, especially in a game where scoring chances were limited and a successful attempt could have given the Ravens a two-score lead.
- Derrick Henry’s fumble changes everything. Henry’s first fumble of the season came at a particularly damaging moment, giving Cleveland possession at Baltimore’s 35-yard line with the Ravens leading by one score at the time (10-3). The turnover handed the Browns a short field, a dangerous proposition vs. any NFL team.
- Cleveland immediately capitalized on the turnover. The Browns needed just seven plays to cover 35 yards, and Audric Estime ran a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10. Baltimore’s defense limited Cleveland for most of the afternoon, but the short field made the Browns’ task much easier and led to Cleveland's first and only TD, shifting momentum in a game Baltimore had largely controlled.
The downright ugly
Things happen in an NFL divisional game, especially those played in the AFC North. Rashod Bateman exited this one with an injury. Bateman left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return. His absence raised concerns for an offense already struggling to sustain drives, though the full impact will depend on the injury's severity and his availability moving forward.
Baltimore’s offensive collapse ultimately proved too much to overcome. After Cleveland tied the game, Baltimore had chances to respond but couldn't generate the first downs needed to regain control.
The ending added another layer of frustration. With two seconds remaining, the Ravens appeared to block Andre Szmyt’s field-goal attempt, but the play wouldn't count. An offsides penalty gave the Browns another chance. Szmyt converted the next attempt to secure the 13-10 win as time expired, leaving Baltimore to wonder how a game that started so well slipped away.
The Ravens must now regroup before hosting the Cincinnati Bengals, who are coming off a bye. Baltimore can't rely on a fast start alone; it needs four quarters of complementary football to turn promising stretches into wins.
