The Ravens acquired Trey Hendrickson to close out games and unleash the pass rush potential in their young, talented teammates. Hendrickson was formidable and caused chaos on nearly every down in his debut.
Hendrickson did not record a sack, but the underlying numbers revealed how dramatically he affected the defense.
According to Next Gen Stats, Baltimore generated a 58.6% pressure rate and recorded two sacks when Hendrickson was on the field during its 41-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens’ pressure rate dropped to 20% when Hendrickson was off the field, and they did not record a sack on those plays. Tavius Robinson recorded the Ravens’ first sack of the season during the first quarter. Malaki Starks added a fourth-down sack late in the fourth, effectively ending Indianapolis’ final comeback attempt. The Ravens acquired Hendrickson to add a proven finisher to their defensive front and someone capable of consistently winning one-on-one matchups. His first performance illustrated that his value extends beyond traditional sack totals.
Jones completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Baltimore’s pressure contributed to several hurried throws and helped the Ravens secondary hold Indianapolis’ wide receivers to limited production.
Hendrickson’s presence should become even more valuable when Nnamdi Madubuike returns to the lineup. Pairing Hendrickson’s edge pressure with Madubuike’s interior disruption would make it significantly harder for opposing offenses.
