The Baltimore Ravens had logged only two practices at training camp before one theme emerged in a post-session conversation with Roquan Smith. One might expect that theme to continue to surface whenever players and coaches discuss Jesse Minter's defense.
Communication... It's a word we all use in relation to others, typically to stress its undying importance. That word isn't being tossed around accidentally. The head coach's scheme implementation is ongoing, and he's relying on his players to help the process along.
Minter has challenged his guys from the opening days of camp, intentionally installing a variety of coverages, alignments and responsibilities designed to force players to communicate before the snap. The objective isn't simply to test
their football IQ. It's to establish the habits the Ravens believe will define their defense throughout the season. Roquan Smith says that process begins with Minter himself.
Jesse Minter is asking for players to take ownership
Smith has played for multiple defensive coordinators and head coaches throughout his NFL career, but he described Minter's leadership style as one built on collaboration rather than command.
"He asks for feedback. [You] give him active feedback, and he reciprocates that and it goes from there, so it is always great when you know you have someone that actually hears you out. Not necessarily meaning everything is going to go the way you want it to go, but he always has to do what is best for the team. I think hearing you out, and if it is something that he sees is best for the team, then he will echo that through his actions, and that is awesome."
Smith also praised Minter for following through on a promise made when he arrived in Baltimore, creating an environment where players have a voice. He's made changes based on suggestions. That doesn't mean every theory becomes part of the game plan. Instead, Smith said players appreciate knowing they're being heard, creating greater investment in the defense they're building together.
"He is true to his word, and that is what you have in this world. I think when you have your word — you say something, and you go about your word — and to this day I feel like he has been about his word. [When] he says something, that is what he is going to do."
That collaborative approach has already earned the respect of one of Baltimore's most accomplished defensive leaders. The emphasis on dialogue extends well beyond positional meetings.
Communication is becoming Baltimore's defensive standard.
Minter had previously explained that his staff would intentionally overload players with information during the opening days of camp. That would force them to communicate through different coverages and adjustments before the snap. Rather than simplifying the install, the Ravens are now increasing the mental workload, expecting it to make game-day communication second nature.
Safety Kyle Hamilton recently praised the defense's communication, while Smith believes Minter's voice on the headset will provide another advantage once the regular season begins. The veteran linebacker said having a defensive-minded head coach calling plays allows Minter to recognize situations as they develop and relay valuable reminders before the snap.
Strong communication won't guarantee a dominant defense, but it often separates good units from great ones. If Baltimore continues embracing Minter's collaborative approach, the conversations taking place on the practice field in July could become one of the defense's biggest strengths when the games begin to matter.
