The further we travel from the final whistle, the more we want to revisit the events. The Baltimore Ravensoffense didn't need to reinvent itself at halftime on Sunday.
It just needed to keep doing what worked. Maintain course, if you will. Instead, a promising first half gave way to another frustrating afternoon.
The offense couldn't sustain drives or respond as the Cincinnati Bengals took control. The result seemed unavoidable, and undesirable. For Tyler Huntley, the breakdown came down to a familiar but consequential problem. Baltimore stopped making the plays it needed for a much-needed win.
“We didn't make the plays we needed to make in the second half, and we have to do that. It's going to look like a whole different ballgame if we do that.”
His postgame comments offered insight into three defining offensive questions: a missed fourth-down opportunity, Zay Flowers' limited involvement after halftime, and the point at which Baltimore's production began to fade.
Tyler Huntley weighs in on the fourth-and-2 play to Josh Cuevas
One of Baltimore's pivotal moments came when the team chose to eschew a field-goal attempt on fourth-and-two. Instead, they chose to try to convert the first down. The targeted receiver was rookie tight end Josh Cuevas. The play offered a chance to keep the drive alive, but the Ravens did not convert. That made it harder for the offense to sustain momentum as the game shifted.
Huntley believed Cuevas was impeded on the play. He also acknowledged how much was riding on the snap.
“I feel like [Josh Cuevas] got ran into. But at that moment, that's a key play in the drive right there.”
His response was brief, but it underscored the situation's importance. On fourth down, the offense had little margin for error. Failing to convert meant losing possession when Baltimore needed to keep its offense on the field.
Tyler Huntley explains why Flowers saw little involvement until the fourth quarter
Zay Flowers had been a major part of Baltimore's first-half production. He finished with eight receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. Yet he did not record another touch until the fourth quarter, leaving a notable gap between his early impact and his involvement as the game slipped away.
Huntley did not point to a specific play call or say Flowers was deliberately taken out of the offense. Instead, he said he focused on his reads and tried to put the team in the best position to succeed.
“I'm in the moment, so I don't [have an answer as to why he wasn't targeted much in the third quarter]. I'm just out there going through my reads and trying to get us in the best position [to win].”
That answer offers a glimpse into the quarterback's perspective, but it does not fully explain why one of the offense's most productive players went so long without a touch. The result was still striking: Baltimore struggled to build momentum while Flowers, who had helped create its early advantage, was largely absent.
Huntley identifies where Baltimore's offense lost effectiveness
Huntley repeatedly returned to execution when asked what changed after halftime. He did not identify a major Cincinnati adjustment as the decisive factor, arguing instead that the Ravens failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
“Like I said, I feel like we didn't make the plays. That's what changed up.”
He offered a more specific explanation when discussing Baltimore's third-down performance. The offense handled those situations reasonably well before halftime, but that effectiveness didn't carry into the second half, making it harder to extend possessions and build scoring drives.
“I feel like our third-down rate in the first half was pretty decent. We got down to the second half, and it fell out the window a little bit. So, like I said, we have to make those plays in the second half and it will be a different ballgame.”
For Baltimore, the challenge is turning those missed opportunities into lessons that translate to better execution. A failed fourth-down conversion, a quiet stretch for a key playmaker, and a third-down decline may look like separate problems, but they all left the offense with fewer chances to change the game's direction.
Huntley believes the outcome could have been different if the Ravens had made the plays available to them. Now, the offense has to prove that belief can become reality, because recognizing where a game slipped away matters only if Baltimore finds a way to keep the next one from following the same script.
