The Baltimore Ravenshave invested heavily in their secondary. Look no further than three first-round picks invested in the defensive backfield since 2022 alone, and while established veterans such as Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton remain the group's foundation, much of the attention this summer has centered on a collection of younger defensive backs attempting to carve out larger roles.
The talent has been obvious. The growth has been noticeable. According to Hamilton, however, what truly stands out isn't physical ability. It's maturity. Following Wednesday's joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings, the three-time Pro Bowler spoke with the media and was asked, among other things, about Baltimore's young defensive backs and the progress they
have made throughout training camp.
His answer highlighted several players by name while offering insight into why he believes the group continues trending in the right direction.
"We have a younger DB room, but guys play past their age, for sure... It is just [about] challenging everything, challenging at the catch point. If you are out of position, run to get in position, strain to get in position [and] challenge every single pass because you never know what will happen. You could cause a distraction; the receiver could drop, [and] you break the ball up [and] take them to the ground."
Hamilton's praise didn't stop there. The veteran safety also pointed to T.J. Tampa Jr., Nate Wiggins, and second-year safety Malaki Starks as examples of a young secondary continuing to develop despite carrying significant responsibilities.
The Ravens value more than talent, and Hamilton's comments echoed sentiments Ravens head coach Jesse Minter also shared. Minter praised Baltimore's cornerbacks for playing with confidence, trusting their technique, and understanding when they can be aggressive. Hamilton believes one trait may be helping accelerate that development.
When discussing the secondary's performance against Minnesota's talented receiving corps, he pointed to what he called "goldfish-memory stuff," a phrase football coaches often use to describe players who quickly move on from mistakes. For young defensive backs, that mentality can be just as important as speed, instincts, or ball skills.
"I saw a lot of confidence. I saw a lot of 'goldfish-memory' stuff. They are going to make plays. It is what it is. It is the NFL. They have a few guys over there that can really go. So, if you get a ball caught on you, who cares? It is what it is. Next play, go get a breakup, go get a pick."
Cornerbacks and safeties operate in a profession where mistakes are highly visible. One misstep can lead to a big gain, a touchdown, or a highlight that circulates across social media within minutes. Players who dwell on those moments often struggle. Players who learn from them and move forward tend to survive.
The Ravens' DBs are growing up fast
That mindset appeared throughout Wednesday's practice. The Vikings generated their share of positive plays, but Hamilton was encouraged by how Baltimore's defensive backs responded. Rather than retreating into a shell, they continued challenging receivers, attacking the football, and competing at the catch point.
Those are traits the Ravens expect from veteran defenders. Hamilton sees younger players beginning to embrace them as well. His praise wasn't centered on interceptions or splash plays. Instead, it focused on something less visible but equally important. Baltimore's young defensive backs are learning one of football's hardest lessons: how to forget a bad rep and attack the next one.
If that mentality continues developing alongside the talent already present in the room, the Ravens may have more than a promising young secondary. They may have a group capable of growing up much faster than anyone expected.
That is encouraging news for a franchise that has built much of its identity around defensive back play. Baltimore's young secondary still has growing to do, but Hamilton's comments suggest the foundation is already being established. The physical tools were never the question. The challenge was whether young players could develop the confidence and short memory required to survive in the NFL. If Wednesday was any indication, the Ravens believe that process is well underway.
