The Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts arrived at the same destination last season. They took very different roads to get there.
Baltimore stumbled out of the gate, losing five of its first six games before ripping off five consecutive victories to climb back into contention. Just when it appeared the Ravens had rediscovered themselves, they lost four of their final six contests and finished 8-9. The death nail was a Week 18 loss to the hated Pittsburgh Steelers.
Indianapolis experienced the opposite journey. The Colts raced to an 8-2 start and briefly looked like one of the NFL's surprise contenders. Then injuries piled up, momentum disappeared, and they lost their final seven games.
Now, both teams begin a new season in search of a fresh
start. If either hopes to leave Week 1 with a victory, these matchups will likely play a major role in determining the outcome.
Camryn Bynum vs. Lamar Jackson
This matchup may not occur on every snap, but its impact could be felt throughout the afternoon. Free safety Camryn Bynum is expected to wear the green dot and relay defensive calls for Lou Anarumo's Colts defense. That responsibility becomes significantly more challenging when the opposing quarterback is Lamar Jackson.
Jackson serves as Baltimore's on-field offensive conductor, making adjustments and processing information before and after the snap. Bynum's ability to get the Colts aligned quickly and correctly could determine whether Indianapolis limits explosive plays or spends the afternoon chasing them.
Another factor worth monitoring is rookie linebacker C.J. Allen. He's the outstanding rookie linebacker in Indianapolis' defense. If the Ravens can force Indianapolis' young signal-caller into difficult situations, Baltimore may gain an advantage in the middle of the field.
Laiatu Latu vs. Ronnie Stanley
Few individual battles will be more important than this one. Latu enters the season as one of Indianapolis' most dangerous pass rushers and is expected to spend plenty of time attacking Ronnie Stanley's side of the formation. Stanley's assignment is simple in theory but difficult in practice: keep Jackson's blind side clean.
If Stanley consistently wins, Baltimore's offense could find a rhythm early. If Latu creates pressure, the Ravens may be forced to adjust protections throughout the game. Don't be surprised if Arden Key factors into this equation as well. He could see plenty of snaps opposite Roger Rosengarten, creating another intriguing matchup along the edge, but don't rule out Latu and Key swapping sides in the defensive alignment.
Ravens interior offensive line vs. DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart
This battle may ultimately decide whether Derrick Henry gets rolling. Buckner and Stewart form one of the NFL's most imposing interior defensive line tandems. Together they bring more than 600 pounds of size, strength, and experience to the middle of Indianapolis' defense.
The Ravens are entering the season with questions along the interior offensive line after Tyler Linderbaum's departure and Danny Pinter's injury. Veterans and young players alike will be tested immediately. Moving Buckner and Stewart off the ball is difficult enough. Doing it consistently while also preventing Buckner from collapsing the pocket may be Baltimore's toughest challenge of the day.
Ravens receivers vs. the Colts secondary
This matchup won't shock anyone if it becomes one of the game's biggest storylines. Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, Ja'Kobi Lane, and the rest of Baltimore's receiving corps will be challenged by a Colts secondary featuring Charvarius Ward, Sauce Gardner, and Justin Walley.
On paper, Indianapolis appears much stronger than the unit that struggled through much of 2025. Last season, the Colts ranked near the bottom of the NFL in passing defense, allowing 247.9 yards per game. Further development of talent in the secondary was designed to change that.
Baltimore's receivers have an opportunity to make an early statement. The Colts' defensive backs have an opportunity to prove last season's numbers are no longer relevant.
Shane Steichen vs. Jesse Minter
The sideline battle deserves just as much attention as the action between the lines. Steichen remains one of the NFL's more creative offensive minds, while Minter enters his first regular-season game as Baltimore's head coach and defensive play-caller.
Both men will call plays on their sides of the ball and spend the afternoon searching for answers and trying to anticipate what comes next. This chess match could reveal a great deal about both teams. How Minter handles Steichen's offense and how Steichen attacks Baltimore's new defensive system may shape the flow of the entire game.
Week 1 should reveal plenty about both teams.
Season openers rarely answer every question, but they often reveal where teams stand. The Ravens want to prove last year's collapse is behind them. The Colts are trying to show that their seven-game losing streak last season was an aberration rather than a warning sign of things to come.
Somewhere between Jackson's brilliance, Henry's power, Minter's defensive debut, and Steichen's offensive creativity, one team will take the first step toward changing its story. The margins between winning and losing in the NFL are often razor-thin. These matchups may determine which side leaves Indianapolis believing 2026 will unfold very differently from 2025.
