Much of the attention surrounding the Baltimore Ravens' wide receiver room this summer has centered on the players. Ja'Kobi Lane has become one of training camp's biggest stories. Zay Flowers broke the bank and enjoyed a nice payday. He continues to establish himself as one of the offense's leaders. Rashod Bateman is looking to bounce back from a disappointing season.
Behind the scenes, however, one member of the coaching staff is earning praise of his own. When Ravens head coach Jesse Minter was asked recently about the pairing of wide receivers coach Keary Colbert and assistant wide receivers coach Prentice Gill, he didn't hesitate to describe Gill as a "rising star." Days later, Colbert offered an even stronger endorsement.

Sunday after Ravens practice, Colbert discussed his relationship with Gill and explained why he believes the young assistant has a bright future in the profession.
"I've been fortunate to know Prentice [Gill] for a long time, and [he's] one of my very close friends. He's a guy that I've worked with before in the past, and even when we were coaching in different places, we'd always, each year, be bouncing ideas off each other and talking ball with one another."
That familiarity made Colbert's arrival in Baltimore easier, but his praise extended well beyond friendship. Gill has already built strong relationships within Baltimore's receiver room after spending the past several years with the organization.
Keary Colbert sees a bright future for Prentice Gill
One of the highlights of the offseason was the clip of Ja'Kobi Lane receiving the phone call to inform him he was being drafted by Baltimore. There, we were reminded of his relationship with Gill. They both spent time with the USC Trojans at different junctures. Gill recruited Lane during his high school years at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona. Gill joined the Ravens' staff in 2024.
Lane credits Gill for connecting him with Baltimore. According to Colbert, Gill's institutional knowledge has become an important asset as the Ravens continue building a new offensive staff around coordinator Declan Doyle.
"Obviously, he's been here for a while, [and] he has a great relationship with the guys in the room. He understands the guys in the room — the skill sets and just little things about the players."
Colbert then echoed Minter's earlier assessment. "I do believe and agree that he's a rising star in the profession," Colbert said. The veteran receivers coach pointed to Gill's intelligence, work ethic and attention to detail as reasons for that belief.
"He's very smart. He works hard. He's detailed. I'm fortunate and blessed to have him as part of our group."
Another respected voice joins the chorus. Minter's comments alone were noteworthy. Hearing nearly identical praise from the coach who works alongside Gill every day adds even more credibility.
The Ravens have undergone significant changes this offseason, particularly on the coaching staff. New voices have arrived throughout the building, creating fresh opportunities for assistants to establish themselves and take on greater responsibilities. Based on the way both Minter and Colbert talk about Gill, the Ravens may already have one of their most promising young coaches in place.
While most of the headlines from training camp will continue to focus on Baltimore's receivers making plays on the field, the praise coming from inside the building suggests another important development may be taking place behind the scenes. If Colbert's evaluation proves accurate, Prentice Gill could become a name Ravens fans hear much more often in the years ahead.
