The Baltimore Ravens have scored 106 points in three games, but there is still room to grow. Lamar Jackson continues to produce at a high level. Yet, too often he has been forced to overcome penalties, inconsistent third-down execution, and defensive lapses that place extra pressure on the offense.
The Tennessee Titans presentanother challenge in Week 4. Their defense has been more competitive than their record might suggest, and they have shown an ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks when offenses become one-dimensional. If Baltimore wants another productive afternoon from its franchise quarterback, several factors must go its way. The blueprint to the Ravens' first home win of the season seems obvious.
Keep Lamar Jackson upright.
Everything begins with protection.
Tennessee recorded three sacks against Jameis Winston last week and consistently disrupted New York's passing game. The Ravens have invested heavily in their offensive line because they understand how important it is to keep Jackson clean.
When Jackson has time, he remains one of the NFL's most dangerous quarterbacks. He can dissect defenses from the pocket, extend plays when necessary, and create explosive opportunities downfield. Tennessee will undoubtedly test Baltimore's protection schemes, making pass protection one of the game's most important storylines.
Lean on Derrick Henry and the tight ends.
The Ravens are at their best when defenses must account for multiple threats. Derrick Henry remains one of the league's most physically imposing runners. Baltimore's tight ends have shown they can create favorable matchups over the middle.
Establishing Henry early can help slow Tennessee's pass rush while opening throwing lanes for Jackson. The same is true of involving the tight ends on short and intermediate routes. If the Titans are forced to commit additional defenders to stopping the run, Jackson should find opportunities in the passing game.
Mix in a few designed quarterback runs.
Jackson's legs remain a weapon that no defense can fully prepare for. He rushed for 50 yards on six carries last week and has already accumulated 124 rushing yards through three games.
Baltimore should be smart about how often it exposes Jackson to contact, especially given his recent back issue. Still, a handful of designed runs can force Tennessee's defense to hesitate. That split-second of indecision often creates larger opportunities elsewhere in the offense.
Improve on third down and in the red zone.
The Ravens have converted only 37.04% of their third-down opportunities and have occasionally left points on the field inside the red zone, converting a little over 66% of their red-zone trips into touchdowns. Those numbers must improve.
Jackson has proven throughout his career that he can deliver in critical situations. Baltimore needs to put him in favorable positions by avoiding penalties and staying ahead of the chains. If the Ravens finish drives with touchdowns and sustain possessions on third down, Jackson should have every opportunity to put together another strong performance against Tennessee.
The Titans can make life difficult for opposing offenses, but Baltimore has the better quarterback and one of the league's most explosive attacks. If the Ravens protect Jackson, remain disciplined, and capitalize on scoring opportunities, their MVP quarterback should once again be positioned for a productive afternoon.
