The Baltimore Ravens are only a handful of practices into training camp. That obviously makes it far too early to crown breakout stars. Still, every summer brings a few young players who force their way into the conversation by consistently making plays. Early signs indicate that rookie running back Adam Randall appears to be one of them.
Things seemed to come together when Derrick Henry was given a scheduled veteran rest day during Saturday's practice. Randall saw his workload increase and again capitalized on his opportunities. It was another encouraging showing for the rookie, whose early flashes have not gone unnoticed by head coach Jesse Minter.

Asked about Randall's performance during a press conference at Maryland's SECU Stadium, Minter
acknowledged the efforts of the fifth-round selection. He also offered a reminder that training camp is a marathon, not a sprint.
"You said it. The word 'flash' is there. There are plays in the run game, plays in the pass game. Adam Randall has a good skill set... Like all the young guys, you're four days in [to the evaluation process]. You're not overreacting to one practice or one play. You're just trying to build their consistency [and] keep chasing that consistency."
That measured response reflects Baltimore's approach to evaluating rookies. Big plays can grab attention, but earning a role requires stacking productive days and proving reliable throughout training camp and the preseason.
Henry's maintenance day created more opportunities for Randall, and the rookie made the most of them. Those extra repetitions can be invaluable for a young player competing to establish himself in a crowded backfield. Minter also pointed to the confidence that comes from making plays early in camp.
"It's always great when those guys flash and are able to make some plays... It only helps their confidence."
Randall still has plenty of work ahead before his role comes into focus, especially once the pads come on and preseason games begin. Still, through the opening days of camp, he has done exactly what coaches hope young players will do: take advantage of every opportunity and give the staff a reason to keep watching.
