The Baltimore Ravens are outside the AFC playoff field entering Week 8 after consecutive losses to division opponents, adding pressure to a team that started the season expected to compete for an AFC North championship.
Baltimore dropped to 4-3 following Sunday's 35-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving the Ravens ninth in the AFC playoff standings. Cincinnati improved to 4-2 and moved into the seventh and final postseason spot, while Cleveland and Pittsburgh strengthened their AFC North standing. The Ravens remain within striking distance of a wild-card berth, but their 0-2 record against division opponents has complicated their path to the postseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs currently hold the AFC's No. 1 seed at 5-1, followed by the Buffalo
Bills, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars as the remaining division leaders. Denver, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati occupy the three wild-card positions, leaving New England and Baltimore as the first two teams outside the projected playoff field.
The Ravens have 10 regular-season games remaining, giving them opportunities to regain ground in the conference standings. However, Baltimore must improve its performance against AFC opponents, starting with Sunday's matchup against Buffalo, to avoid falling further behind in an increasingly competitive playoff race.
Updated AFC playoff standings after Week 7
The AFC playoff picture entering Week 8 features four division leaders and three wild-card teams, with several additional contenders still competing for postseason positioning.
The standings leave Baltimore behind three AFC North opponents: Cleveland leads the division at 5-2, Pittsburgh sits at 5-2, and Cincinnati is at 4-2. The Ravens have already lost to the Browns and Bengals, making their remaining divisional matchups particularly important as they attempt to climb back into the playoff field.
Ravens lose ground in AFC North after Bengals defeat
Baltimore's biggest concern is its position in the AFC North, where the Ravens have fallen behind three teams after their latest defeat. Cleveland and Pittsburgh are both 5-2, while Cincinnati improved to 4-2 with Sunday's victory at M&T Bank Stadium. The Browns currently lead the division after beating Pittsburgh, leaving the Steelers in sixth place and the Bengals in seventh.
The Ravens entered their matchup against Cincinnati with an opportunity to strengthen their postseason position, but the Bengals scored 35 unanswered points after Baltimore built a 13-0 lead. The loss exposed continued concerns about the Ravens' defense, offensive consistency, and ability to finish games, particularly against opponents competing for the same postseason positions.
Baltimore's 0-2 divisional record adds another complication, as head-to-head results and division records can become significant factors in playoff tiebreakers. The Ravens have already lost to Cleveland and Cincinnati, making their remaining games against AFC North opponents even more important. With Pittsburgh riding a three-game winning streak and Cleveland continuing to win close games, Baltimore can no longer afford to consistently surrender ground within the division.
AFC wild-card race leaves Ravens with little room for error
The AFC wild-card race is becoming increasingly competitive, with Denver holding the fifth seed at 5-2 and Pittsburgh occupying the sixth position with the same record. Cincinnati currently owns the final berth at 4-2, while New England and Baltimore are immediately behind at 4-3.
The Patriots hold the eighth position ahead of Baltimore, with a 4-1 conference record compared with the Ravens' 2-2 mark. New England also has a 2-0 record in the AFC East, while Baltimore remains winless in its first two division games. Those differences could matter if the teams finish with identical records and need conference tiebreakers.
The Ravens are only one loss behind Cincinnati in the standings, but the Bengals' win in Baltimore gives Cincinnati an early head-to-head advantage. The Ravens will have another opportunity against their division rival later in the season, making that rematch potentially significant in determining whether Baltimore can recover its position in the playoff race.
There is still plenty of football left, and the Ravens have enough offensive talent to stay competitive with the AFC's top teams. However, Baltimore must start producing more consistent results instead of relying on other contenders to lose. The team's margin for error has narrowed considerably during its two-game losing streak.
Week 8 matchup against Buffalo carries major playoff implications
Baltimore travels to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a matchup that could significantly influence its position in the AFC playoff picture. The Bills are 5-1 and hold the conference's second seed, giving the Ravens an opportunity to improve their standing against one of the AFC's top contenders.
The game also presents a difficult challenge for an offense dealing with injuries to quarterback Lamar Jackson and several offensive linemen. Rookie guard Vega Ioane suffered an MCL sprain against Cincinnati, while Baltimore has continued adjusting its offensive line combinations after acquiring center Cam Jurgens from Philadelphia. The Ravens must protect the quarterback, establish Derrick Henry in the running game, and avoid the prolonged scoring droughts that have contributed to their recent losses.
Several other AFC matchups could reshape the standings in Week 8. Cleveland travels to Pittsburgh in a game with direct implications for the AFC North lead, while Cincinnati hosts Tennessee with an opportunity to strengthen its wild-card position. Denver also hosts Kansas City in a matchup between the AFC West's top two teams, and New England travels to Miami looking to remain ahead of Baltimore in the postseason race.
Those results will help determine how much ground the Ravens can recover, but Baltimore must prioritize winning its own games. A win over Buffalo would bring the Ravens to 5-3 and provide an important conference win before the schedule moves deeper into the season's second half.
Can the Ravens still make the AFC playoffs?
Baltimore remains in the playoff hunt despite falling to ninth in the conference, but the Ravens face increasing pressure to correct the problems that have contributed to their consecutive losses. Jackson's return would provide an important boost to an offense that has struggled with injuries and inconsistency, while improved defensive execution is essential after the Bengals exploited Baltimore's secondary and running defense.
The Ravens still have 10 regular-season games remaining, including important matchups against division opponents that could reshape the AFC North standings. Their current record isn't insurmountable, but the team must start turning opportunities into wins to avoid falling further behind Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati.
Baltimore entered the season expecting to compete for the division title and potentially return to the postseason. At 4-3, those goals remain possible, but the path has become much harder. The Ravens' next opportunity to reverse their slide comes Sunday against Buffalo, when another loss could leave them facing an even steeper climb in the AFC playoff race.
