Baltimore Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey has likely been motivated by the disappointing Week 2 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Well, the Dallas Cowboys have a few premier wide receivers for Humphrey to recalibrate against this weekend.
Cowboys wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens both pose threats to the Ravens' secondary in the upcoming matchup in Rio de Janeiro. Interchangeable responsibility will shape matchups for Humphrey and defensive back Nate Wiggins to cover Lamb and Pickens, and it will depend heavily on how Ravens head coach Jesse Minter uses his blitz scheme. The Ravens allowed the Saints only 65 rushing yards in Week 2, but Saints quarterback Tyler Shough carved up 223 passing yards to create the game difference.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott offers far more prowess than Shough, and his wide receiver corps is far stronger than the one the Ravens faced last weekend. Prescott has already thrown six passing touchdowns this season, and Lamb has caught three of them.
Ultimately, the Ravens cannot afford to get into an offensive shootout that will make them susceptible to Lamb's reputable route running. The Ravens' defense played fair against the Saints, but playing fair will not be enough against a Cowboys offense on a trajectory to be the highest-scoring in the NFC. Humphrey must assume responsibility for setting the tone, and he can do that only by stopping the imminent threat lined up at wide receiver on the opponent's side.
