The Baltimore Ravens have two very different game plans. One works before halftime, and the other seemingly disappears afterward. Building a lead has not been the problem. Protecting it, adjusting when opponents counter, and finding answers when the original plan breaks down have proved far more difficult.
The Ravens have spent too many Sundays making the difficult part look easy, and the supposed fundamentals look impossible. They can build a lead, find an offensive rhythm, and frustrate an opponent, only to watch their work unravel whenever any team makes adjustments.
Here's the problem with that. The Buffalo Bills are the next step of their journey. Lapses on either side of the ball could prove fatal against Josh Allen and company. Offensive
and defensive discipline are both mandatory. The Ravens have several areas to address. Here are five that will need to be a part of team meetings before they set foot back on the field for another contest.
Contain Josh Allen without sacrificing pressure
Josh Allen is difficult enough to defend when he stays in the pocket. Give him open escape lanes, and the Ravens risk turning routine pass-rush snaps into extended plays that exhaust coverage and create downfield opportunities.
Baltimore has lacked consistent edge pressure, making discipline as important as explosiveness. 16 sacks isn't terrible, but they rarely come when most needed.
Edge defenders must avoid rushing past the quarterback and opening running lanes, while interior pressure needs to prevent Allen from stepping forward comfortably. A pass rush that creates pressure but loses containment can actually give him the space he needs to hurt a defense.
Find a defensive counterpunch
Jesse Minter and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver have seen their unit produce effective stretches, but opposing offenses have too often found answers as games progress. That happens. It's the NFL. What's concerning, however, is that Baltimore has rarely had a counterpunch to said adjustments.
The recent scoring splits are stark: the Ravens have been outscored 48-0 in the second halves of their past two losses. The earlier defeat against the New Orleans Saintsoffered the same warning. The Saints trailed 14-6 at halftime before outscoring Baltimore 18-3 during the final two quarters.
Across the season, the Ravens have produced a minus-70 second-half point differential. Against Buffalo, the defense must be willing to change coverage, pressure packages, or personnel when the original approach stops working. Repeating a failing strategy and hoping for better execution is not an adjustment.
Give the running game a clear identity
Baltimore's ground game needs a more dependable foundation, particularly with Lamar Jackson's availability uncertain. The Ravens cannot assume that every concept will work regardless of who is available to block or carry the ball.
Minter has discussed identifying the team's strengths and building around them instead of asking players to execute too many different concepts. Changes along the offensive line have complicated that task, while personnel changes have affected which players will be available for certain assignments.
The answer is to settle on a manageable set of run concepts that fit the current lineup and execute them well. That means understanding which blocking combinations are working, putting players in positions to succeed, and resisting the urge to add complexity when the basics aren't reliable.
A stronger rushing identity would also give Baltimore options beyond asking its quarterback to solve every difficult situation. The Ravens need a run game they can trust when the defense knows a run is coming, not one that works only after the passing attack has already created favorable conditions. Against Buffalo, Baltimore cannot afford to let its rushing attack become an afterthought.
Demand more in-game flexibility from Declan Doyle
Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle must be prepared to change the plan when defenses take away Baltimore's preferred options. An effective opening script is useful, but it cannot be the offense's only reliable source of answers.
The most important tests come in specific situations: third downs when the defense disguises its coverage, short-yardage plays when the opponent crowds the line, and red-zone possessions when space is limited. Baltimore needs calls that account for those challenges rather than relying on a favorite concept to win regardless of the look presented.
Doyle has had to manage Jackson's absence and repeated offensive-line changes, which limits the menu of plays he can reasonably call. That makes adaptability even more important. The offense needs accessible alternatives, including quicker throws when protection is vulnerable and formations that help create favorable matchups for the personnel available.
Jackson has returned to practice, which is a positive, but the goal isn't constant change for its own sake. It's about recognizing when a defensive adjustment removes a preferred option and having another answer ready before a drive stalls.
Address the slot coverage problem
Marlon Humphrey is enduring one of the most difficult stretches of his career statistically, and Baltimore's coverage issues have been especially pronounced in the slot. The defense has allowed a 121.9 passer rating on slot targets, a troubling figure heading into another matchup that will test its ability to cover the middle of the field.
That doesn't automatically mean Humphrey needs to be benched. Truth be told, though no one can be certain, it feels like Baltimore would have done that by now if they were considering it. The question is whether a schematic adjustment would better protect the slot and let Baltimore's other defensive playmakers operate in more advantageous roles.
Using linebackers more effectively in intermediate coverage could help free Kyle Hamilton to play to his strengths as a versatile defender who can read the quarterback and attack the football. The solution may involve changing responsibilities rather than removing a player from the lineup. But Baltimore needs a credible answer for opponents who target the slot, because leaving the same vulnerabilities exposed will invite the Bills to exploit them.
